60,000 Tree Seedlings Planted In Kaberwa, Kaboywo To Conserve Mt Elgon Forest

GOVERNOR’S PRESS UNIT

Western Regional Commissioner Irungu Macharia and Bungoma Deputy Governor Janepher Mbatiany have led Mt. Elgon residents in a tree planting exercise that has seen over 60,000 tree seedlings planted in Kaberwa and Kaboywo forests, Mt. Elgon.

The planting exercise which is in partnership with Kenya forestry service aims at planting 6 Million trees in a bid to achieve the government set forest cover.

Speaking during the occasion Mbatiany urged the Community to have proper means to protect the seedlings to maturity to enable Bungoma achieve the target forest cover even as she encouraged them to protect and conserve the water catchment areas.

Bungoma has so far planted approximately 500,000 tree seedlings for the last 2 years, standing the highest in tree cover in the entire western and Nyanza regions.

The variety of trees planted during the exercise include; The East African Green Heart, Elgon Teak, Olive tree, Podocarpus falcatus among other species.

Other leaders who attended the function include; Regional Conservator Rose Akimbo, Bungoma County Commissioner, Thomas Sankei, MCAs, Chief officer Environment, Soet Sichei and other senior National and county government officials.
