Bungoma Leadership Hosts Meeting on Whole Grain Fortification with Fortified Whole Grain Alliance and Partners In Food Solutions

The Fortified Whole Grain Alliance, in collaboration with Partners In Food Solutions, hosted top leadership from the Department of Health and Sanitation in Bungoma County to discuss whole grain fortification.

The breakfast meeting was attended by Acting Health and Sanitation CECM Bonventure Chengek who emphasized, “As leaders in health management, we are constantly seeking sustainable and impactful ways to combat malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and non-communicable diseases. Whole grain fortification presents a unique opportunity to enhance the nutritional value of staple foods while maintaining affordability and accessibility for our populations.”

He continued, “By fortifying whole grains with essential vitamins and minerals, we can help reduce deficiencies in iron, zinc, and B vitamins—nutrients critical for immune function, cognitive development, and overall health.”

The discussions focused on exploring the science behind whole grain fortification, understanding its benefits, and strategizing effective implementation of policies to support its adoption. Waziri Chengek also highlighted the importance of involving the private sector to improve food safety and quality in the county, stressing the need for more collaborations.

The team (Fortified Whole Grain Alliance and Partners In Food Solutions) praised the invaluable insights and contributions from all participants, expressing eagerness for continued collaboration to promote healthier food solutions for the community.

As part of this collaboration, 28 learning institutions with posho mills and standalone poshos in Bungoma County will benefit from free fortification machines donated by the Fortified Whole Grain Alliance in partnership with Partners In Food Solutions.

Present were the Chief Officer Dr. Magrina Mayama, CDH Dr. Caleb Wanambisi, County Public Health Officer/Food Safety and Quality Coordinator Ken Kundu, and members of the County Health Management Team.
