The last surviving elder of his generation and a respected pillar of wisdom, history and community leadership in Kamolo Division, Malaba South Ward, Mzee Henry Omalwa Opuko, has died aged 102.
The death of the revered elder was announced on Wednesday by his son and former Councillor, Ronald Osialai, who said the family had accepted his passing with deep sorrow and humility.
Mzee Opuko, popularly known as “Mzee Magazeti,” was a member of the Ipasama Clan. He died peacefully on August 8, 2026, at his home in Kodedema Village, Kodedema Sub-Location, Kamolo Location, Kamolo Division, Teso North Sub-County, Busia County.
During his long and remarkable life, Mzee Opuko served the nation in different capacities. He was a Second World War veteran, having served in Egypt during the war.
He was also a committed KANU youth member and became a familiar figure in the community through his work as a vendor of the Daily Nation and Standard newspapers for more than 30 years.
According to the family, he continued selling newspapers until he was forced to retire following a road accident.
His long association with newspapers earned him the popular nickname “Mzee Magazeti,” while his longevity and wealth of knowledge made him an important source of historical information and wisdom within the community.
The family, together with members of the Ipasama Clan, has begun preparations for the burial of the revered Ipasama kingpin.
“Further details regarding funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course,” Osialai said.
The family has appealed to relatives, friends and well-wishers for prayers, comfort and support during this difficult period.
May Mzee Henry Omalwa Opuko rest in eternal peace. His legacy and the history he carried will live on.
