Oparanya to establish Sh1billion regional cancer centre in Kakamega

Kakamega county will established a Sh 1 billion regional cancer treatment center to serve patients from the region and its environs.

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya said the county and national government will install a cancer testing and treatment machines at the Kakamega Teaching and Referral hospital to provide medical care to cancer patients at a lower cost.

He said the center will be the first one in Western and will serve the entire region and neighboring countries like Uganda.

“Few weeks ago I met President Uhuru Kenyatta and discussed the partnership to start the cancer treatment center. He accepted to have a regional cancer center for West Kenya region in Kakamega. The center will be fully equipped with modern cancer equipment to test and treat cancer,” said Oparanya.

The governor observed that many patients could not afford cancer treatment and the center help be of great assistance to them

He said the Center will be operational starting next year.

“The center will reduce the cost of travelling to India or Nairobi to seek cancer treatment,” he said.

Already the County Government has procured and installed histology machine at Kakamega County General Hospital to diagonise cancer.
