Trans Nzoia County has intensified preparations for the expected El Nino rains, with authorities warning residents living near rivers and other flood-prone areas to prepare for possible flooding.
Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Alason Hussein said the county and national governments are working together through the county steering group to develop measures aimed at protecting residents from the anticipated heavy rains.
Hussein said weather experts had warned that the county could receive above-normal rainfall, prompting authorities to advise residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow official warnings.
“We are here as members of the county steering group preparing for the El Nino rains. Both the county and national governments are here, and we are planning strategies to protect our people,” Hussein said.
He identified parts of Endebess and Kwanza sub-counties, as well as areas along riverbeds and near rivers, as locations that could face flooding and related risks.
The commissioner said authorities would issue regular alerts as the rains approach and provide residents with information on areas where they could relocate if their homes become unsafe.
“We want to inform our people early so that as we approach those days, we can advise them accordingly. If it becomes necessary for some people to leave where they live, we will tell them where they can safely relocate,” he said.
Hussein urged residents in flood-prone areas not to ignore government warnings, particularly those living close to rivers and in areas that have experienced flooding in previous years.
Samson Ojwang, the Trans Nzoia County Executive Committee Member for Public Service Management, said the county government would work closely with the national government through the county commissioner to strengthen disaster preparedness.
Ojwang said the county was developing a contingency and preparedness plan to guide its response to emergencies associated with the El Nino rains.
“We will work closely with the national government through the County Commissioner to put in place the strategies needed to protect our people from the effects of El Nino,” Ojwang said.
He said the county government has an emergency fund that would be used to support affected residents once the contingency plan is finalised.
Ojwang assured residents that the county government, under Governor George Natembeya, would work with the national government to minimise loss of life and provide assistance to people affected by flooding.
He said the response would include the provision of both food and non-food items to affected households.
“We will do everything possible to ensure that no resident loses their life as a result of these rains,” Ojwang said.
He also called on Members of County Assembly and other elected leaders to help sensitise residents about the dangers associated with flooding and encourage those living in high-risk areas to heed evacuation orders.
Ojwang said areas in Kwanza and Kiminini sub-counties have historically experienced flooding and would therefore require heightened preparedness as the rains intensify.
The county government said it would continue coordinating with the national government and other stakeholders to ensure residents receive timely warnings and assistance during the rainy season.
