Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has called on Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya to fast-track the completion of the long-delayed Masinde Muliro Stadium in Kanduyi, decrying the slow pace of construction by the current contractor.

Speaking during the unveiling of a Sh50 million state-of-the-art Sports Academy at Friends School Bokoli in Webuye West Constituency, Governor Lusaka said the delay is denying local athletes a vital facility for training and competitions.

“The contractor is moving at a snail’s pace, and this is frustrating our youth, who are eager to utilize the stadium. I urge CS Mvurya and the Ministry to step in and ensure the project is completed without further delay,” Lusaka stated.

The stadium, once complete, is expected to be a major boost to regional and national sports development.

Lusaka emphasized the importance of quality sports infrastructure in nurturing local talent.

During the event presided over by CS Mvurya, Governor Lusaka also pushed for the upgrading of the High Altitude Training Centre in Chemoge, Mt. Elgon into a fully-fledged sports centre of excellence. He noted that the area’s natural high-altitude environment gives it a competitive edge in producing elite long-distance runners.

“Mt. Elgon’s elevation is perfect for developing world-class athletes. We need serious investment to make the training centre a top-tier facility,” he said.

The Governor further proposed the construction of a modern sports complex at Amutala Stadium in Kimilili to address the growing demand for quality sports facilities in the county.

“We have immense sporting talent in Bungoma, but without proper infrastructure, that potential remains largely untapped,” Lusaka remarked.

Governor Lusaka reiterated his administration’s commitment to collaborating with the national government to expand sporting infrastructure and empower young people through structured programs.

The newly launched Bokoli Sports Academy will feature eight running tracks, a football pitch, basketball and netball courts, changing rooms, a social hall, a water storage system, and other critical amenities. It is one of 33 academies being set up across the country under a national initiative aimed at nurturing grassroots talent and promoting youth empowerment.
