An ANC candidate from Mumias North ward in Kakamega County has died barely 12 days to the general elections.
His death has left the family with a ballooning hospital bill of more than 600,000 an amount that the family has claimed unable to raise.
Abdala Kweyu died at Life care hospital in Bungoma where he was admitted after being involved in a grisly road accident.
According to Kweyu’s family, the deceased was on his way home after holding a series of campaigns on yesterday evening when his car rolled severally after colliding with a motorcycle on the busy Matungu – Ogalo road.
“Three people were in the car, the driver died on the spot while the other two were left nursing serious injuries”, said Mohamed Abudi, Kweyu’s son.
Kweyu was eyeing for the Mumias North ward representative seat under the ANC party.
He was facing a stiff competition from the current sitting MCA Roky Omwendo of the ODM party.
However, according to Joseph Ayata, Kakamega county IEBC manager, elections to the said ward will be conducted as planned.
“It’s only the death of a presidential candidate that can stop the proceedings of an elections”, Said Ayatta.
Kweyu was the husband to two wives and several children.
His death has left the family with a ballooning hospital bill of more than 600,000 an amount that the family has claimed unable to raise.
“We have run out of cash, a larger percentage of the money we had was used to finance his campaign trail, our plight is well-wishers and other stake holders to intervene and help us settle the bill to allow his remains to be brought back at home and rest in peace”, said Mohammed.
