Kakamega County Chief of Staff Robert Sumbi has died this morning though the county government is yet to give details over what caused his death.
Mr. Sumbi had been admitted at Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital for several days.
His death comes less than 24 hours after Governor Oparanya shut down operations at the County headquarters for one week in order to fumigate the offices in a bid to curb the spread of Covid19. The directive came after the surge of Covid19 cases in the county.
“Covid19 cases have increased from 4 to 316 in the past few days. Out of these, 154 are still in hospital and seven have succumbed. At least 57 healthcare workers have also contracted the virus,” said Governor Oparanya on Wednesday evening.
He attributed the surge in Covid19 positive cases to residents failing to observe and adhere to protocols laid down by the Ministry of Health.
Oparanya directed that Manyala hospital in Butere and Mautuma hospital in Lugari be designated as Covid19 isolation and treatment centres.
He noted that Mumias Level Four hospital that has a 91-bed capacity is full and now the county referral hospital and Likuyani were admitting new cases of Covid19.
