Basketball legends drawn from Bungoma County are now proposing the establishment of Basketball courts in Sub counties that would help in the nurturing of talents among the upcoming players.
Speaking in Bungoma on Wednesday during the planning of Senator Wakoli Basketball tournament, Cheloti Wasike, the county’s Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) Chairperson, applauded the area senator Wafula Wakoli for sponsoring the two days Basketball tournament that will take place at Bungoma High school from December 21- 22.
The KBF chairperson says that there are many talents in the region that have been wasted, affirming that if the pitches are set in Sub counties it would help in tapping grassroot talents.
“We appreciate our Senator for the move to allocate resources that will facilitate the Basketball tournament at Bungoma high school, the teams have already submitted their applications to participate,” Wasike said.
In addition, Wasike affirms that through such events, talented players will find their way to other bigger teams.
“This tournament will offer an opportunity for the talented youths in Bungoma and its environs to tap into bigger opportunities,” he said.
Caroline Masibo, an official, Kenya Basketball Federation, says that organizing a Basketball tournament in Bungoma is a very noble idea adding that it is a dream come true for me, the Kenya Basketball Federation and Bungoma County.
“We have had this dream for a very long time and today it is becoming a reality and we are excited, we have had a productive meeting for all the stakeholders that are going to be involved in the planning of the Senator Wakoli tournament,” she said.
In Bungoma, Ms. Masibo notes that there are many talents that have been wasted after school, and a lot of our sons and daughters have gone back home.
“Many of our sons and daughters’ talents have been wasted, as we begin this tournament with many teams that have registered. It is a gesture that we have our own talents that can be taken far,” Masibo said.
Further, Ms. Masibo noted that there are 6 ladies teams that have registered to participate in the tournament and 16 teams for men.
“From how the teams have registered, it clearly indicates that we have Basketball talents in Bungoma,” she said.
