Kakamega traders have called upon Governor Fernandes Barasa to relocate a dumpsite situated at Kakamega Bus Park.
Speaking during the cleanup exercise at the market, the traders at Kakamega market complained of a temporary dumping site that has taken a bigger space and making it difficult for the business people to go on with their daily business due to a strong odor that comes out from that damping site.
"There's a special side set aside for dumping garbage here in Kakamega market but I wonder why they damp it here where they know very well that there is business going on," said Kanga
Christopher Kanga, one of the traders, said that the damping site has occupied a larger space that would have been used by other businesswomen to do their business.

Kanga also complained that despite them informing the county government about it, their efforts bore no fruits and nothing has been done so far.

“As businesspeople here in Kakamega market we pay tax to the county government which we expect them to provide better services to us. We have informed the town manager and the minister in charge of environment is aware of the damping site. The county government promised five years ago to find a better place for the garbage but until now we haven’t received any information from them.” Kanga said
Kanga urged the new government to consider the interests of business people and find a lasting solution to the problem.
In response to the complaints, town manager Hudson Kasanga said that the place acts as a garbage holding area; the main damping site is located in Rosterman outcasts of Kakamega town.

The damping site found at the market center only acts as a holding area where in 8 hours that garbage is taken to Rosterman which is the main dumping site in Kakamega town.” said Kasanga
Kasanga explained that Kakamega town has a lot of garbage where they collect more than 180-120 tons of garbage per day. He also called upon all the Kakamega residents to be responsible and be environment ambassadors by cleaning their environment to avoid illegal; damping.
"We would like to work hand in hand with the county government so that this activity will be a continuous program to ensure Kakamega town is clean," said Osita
“I urge all Kakamega county residents to avoid illegal dumping and responsible citizens and clean the environment.” Said Kasanga
Speaking during the event officer from the Rural to Global Organization Catherine Osita who was also the host of the event has called upon the county government of Kakamega to work hand in hand with them to ensure a sustainable environmental cleaning program in Kakamega County.
“We would like to work hand in hand with the county government so that this activity will be a continuous program to ensure Kakamega town is clean,” said Osita
In support of Catherine’s statement Miss Tourism Kakamega county Linnet Jendeka Kamadi urged the county government to educate residents on how to do individual environmental cleaning.
“Apart from cleaning Kakamega town we have sensitized our residents to embrace behavior change. Also my call to County Government as a Tourism Ambassador they should embrace environment action as a key policy issue they should come up with ways to sustain this so that it should not be a one day event,” said Linnet
