{"id":8413,"date":"2025-08-26T18:38:55","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T15:38:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=8413"},"modified":"2025-08-26T18:38:55","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T15:38:55","slug":"bungoma-childrens-hospital-expand-facilities-to-strengthen-care-for-babies-battling-chronic-diseases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=8413","title":{"rendered":"Bungoma Children\u2019s Hospital Expand facilities To Strengthen Care For Babies Battling Chronic Diseases\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Tony Wafula<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bungoma Children\u2019s Hospital has expanded its facilities in bid to strengthen care for babies battling chronic diseases in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the common chronic diseases that attack children include: asthma, diabetes (most children are affected by Type 1), congenital heart problems, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), cystic fibrosis, spinal bifida and hydrocephalus, childhood cancer and sickle cell.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the press during the launch of the new storey building that would accommodate the facility, Dr. Dickens Lubanga, a pediatrician at Bungoma County Referral Hospital (BCRH), said that initially the facility was providing inpatient services with a bed capacity of 10 beds.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8414\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG-20250825-WA0034-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG-20250825-WA0034-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG-20250825-WA0034-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG-20250825-WA0034-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG-20250825-WA0034-629x420.jpg 629w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG-20250825-WA0034-696x464.jpg 696w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG-20250825-WA0034-1068x713.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG-20250825-WA0034.jpg 1124w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Further, Dr. Lubanga noted that the new building would host a capacity of 80 beds, with 10 private wards and 4 semi- private wards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have also put up a small center on top of the building that would provide play therapy for our children because we believe that a healthy child should be able to play,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Lubanga also mentioned that a huge number of children in the region miss out on being in school because of the chronic illness that attacks young children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChronic diseases like sickle cell are rampant in Bungoma and that is why we have decided to expand the facility so that we can help in controlling the menace,\u201d Lubanga said, adding that the community needs children who would later come and take up from the current generation.<\/p>\n<p>To address the growing number of sickle cell cases in the region, Dr. Lubanga reported that Bungoma Children\u2019s Hospital has established specialized clinics for sickle cell.<\/p>\n<p>He confirmed that the hospital is now equipped to conduct sickle cell screenings, unlike before when samples had to be sent to Eldoret for testing.<\/p>\n<p>He emphasized the importance of premarital sickle cell screening as a key strategy in reducing the prevalence of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSickle cell is a genetic disorder that is entirely preventable if couples get tested before marriage. This allows people to make informed decisions about their reproductive health,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lubanga pointed out the long term challenges of raising a child with sickle cell disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaring for a child with sickle cell from birth to adulthood is not only demanding but also financially draining. They require constant medication and frequent hospital visits,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the disease can affect nearly every part of the body, adding that intensified screening can help families avoid such struggles by choosing compatible partners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want our children to live long and healthy lives not to die prematurely from a disease we understand and can control. Photos by Tony Wafula\/ HNs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He revealed that currently the hospital is managing many sickle cell patients.<\/p>\n<p>He added that managing sickle cell disease can cost between Sh6, 000 &#8211; Sh10, 000 per month to cover treatment, Hydroxyurea and vaccinations.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lubanga also said that to boost service delivery, the facility has collaborated with other hospitals in Eldoret and partners to procure advanced diagnostic equipment, adding that more specialists would be dispatched to the facility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have spacious walls designed with children&#8217;s comfort, complete play areas and family friendly spaces,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lubanga decried fewer health specialists noting that Bungoma only has five pediatricians covering a population of more than 2 million people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have enough consultation rooms here so that we don\u2019t take our patients to Eldoret as has been the norm,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Tony Wafula Bungoma Children\u2019s Hospital has expanded its facilities in bid to strengthen care for babies battling chronic diseases in the region.
