{"id":841,"date":"2020-06-03T09:02:28","date_gmt":"2020-06-03T09:02:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/?p=841"},"modified":"2020-06-03T09:02:28","modified_gmt":"2020-06-03T09:02:28","slug":"the-rise-and-fall-of-washiali-in-politics-after-being-dethroned-as-chief-whip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=841","title":{"rendered":"The rise and fall of Washiali in politics after being dethroned as Chief Whip"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kakamega<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Collins Matubwi<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the independence party KANU was\nalmost getting out of power in 2002, a little known Benjamin Washiali was a\nhumble young from the populous Mumias constituency though with a bright future\nahead of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the time Washiali was also joining\npolitics after making a few coins by doing business with the collapsed Mumias\nSugar Company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He vied for the Mumias parliamentary seat but terribly lost to the incumbent MP Wycliffe Osundwa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"636\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/18921187_1939143379666290_7535818627454315857_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/18921187_1939143379666290_7535818627454315857_o.jpg 636w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/18921187_1939143379666290_7535818627454315857_o-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>Benjamin Washiali <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Washiali was lucky when he joined ODM, the Raila Odinga led party in 2007 and for the very first time, he was elected as the MP for Mumias constituency. ODM was the then most populous political party in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> It was a tough tussle against pitting Engineer Julius Nyarotso alias &#8216;amakaratasi&#8217;, Francis Kangwana, Martin Oloo among others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> <strong><em>It is here in ODM that Washiali\u2019s bromance with the Deputy President  William Ruto when he was the Agriculture Minister. Washiali owned an  undisputable trust from the his constituents, thanks to his frequent  demonstrations against the management of Mumias Sugar Company, though to  critical thinkers, they claimed he was using the demos in a bid to do  business with the sugar miller that is on its deathbed. <\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is here in ODM that Washiali\u2019s bromance\nwith the Deputy President William Ruto when he was the Agriculture Minister.\nWashiali owned an undisputable trust from the his constituents, thanks to his frequent\ndemonstrations against the management of Mumias Sugar Company, though to\ncritical thinkers, they claimed he was using the demos in a bid to do business\nwith the sugar miller that is on its deathbed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, one of the most\ncontroversial moves he made was when he organized a demonstration against the management\nof the Mumias Sugar Outgrowers Company (Moco). He successfully antagonized cane\nfarmers and the management. This are some of the reasons the \u2018ailing\u2019 Moco\ncollapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/file72d6j60zq0z1fp22o6fp.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-842\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/file72d6j60zq0z1fp22o6fp.jpg 800w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/file72d6j60zq0z1fp22o6fp-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/file72d6j60zq0z1fp22o6fp-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/file72d6j60zq0z1fp22o6fp-696x522.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Washiali leading demos in Mumias <\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He made cane farmers believe that he\nwas advocating for their rights when in real sense he was about gaining cheap political\npublicity for his own selfish benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moco was a union of cane farmers\nwith elected directors to protect farmers interests, which included, better and\ntimely pay of cane delivered to Mumias Sugar and its employees, adequate farm\ninputs, advocating for better conditions of service and also in conjunction\nwith Mumias Sacco society (Mosaco), they helped cane farmers invest at least 15\nper cent of their total income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em><strong> The fall of Moco started way back on \u00a0May 28, 1976 when its accounts  were put under the custody of Mumias Sugar Company (MSC) by the then  Attorney General Charles Njonjo through a brokered  deal to have the  sugar miller manage Moco\u2019s accounts on grounds that its more than 77,000  farmers were illiterate. <\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fall of Moco started way back on \u00a0May 28, 1976 when its accounts were put under the custody of Mumias Sugar Company (MSC) by the then Attorney General Charles Njonjo through a brokered  deal to have the sugar miller manage Moco\u2019s accounts on grounds that its more than 77,000 farmers were illiterate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG-20200302-WA0019-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG-20200302-WA0019-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG-20200302-WA0019-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG-20200302-WA0019-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG-20200302-WA0019-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG-20200302-WA0019-696x696.jpg 696w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG-20200302-WA0019-1068x1068.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG-20200302-WA0019.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was one of the biggest blunders\nin the history of Mumias sugar that led to its collapse and Washiali instead of\nsalvaging the situation; he gave it a wide berth despite being in a position to\nchampion for the revival of Moco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Washiali, a renowned party hopper jumped ship to join UDF in 2013 and the\nJubilee party in 2017 that elevated him to the position of National Assembly\nChief Whip. It is in his three terms as an MP that he assaulted Kakamega\nGovernor Wycliffe Oparanya on November 25, 2016 in the presence of ODM leader\nRaila Odinga. He would then beat one of his supporters inside a sugarcane plantation.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/97e37e3461f566e954f2182d36564762-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-843\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/97e37e3461f566e954f2182d36564762-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/97e37e3461f566e954f2182d36564762-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/97e37e3461f566e954f2182d36564762-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/97e37e3461f566e954f2182d36564762-696x365.jpg 696w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/97e37e3461f566e954f2182d36564762-1068x561.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/97e37e3461f566e954f2182d36564762.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Washiali and Raila <\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After being appointed as Chief Whip, Washiali\u2019s political life was on the right direction and even he developed ambitions of becoming Kakamega Governorship position in 2022. He traversed the county the better part of 2018 and 2019 solidifying his base but again made a blunder when he accused church leaders of making him poor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said in governorship campaigns he\nwill not use any money since it is what makes them (politicians corrupt). This\nannouncement did not go down well among church leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was on October 18, 2018 during a fund raiser for boda boda Sacco in\nMalava Sub County where he said church leaders have hatched a plot of calling\npoliticians to fund raise for them in exchange of \u2018Special prayers\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><em> \u201cBefore I came here today, I have conducted at least 18 church harambees  in my constituency. The matter is complicated during campaigns in which  when you give Sh10,000 in a funds drive, they don\u2019t clap for you but  when your competitor gives Sh100,000, he is clapped for and gets the  \u2018Special prayer,\u201d said Washiali. <\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBefore I came here today, I have conducted at least 18 church harambees in\nmy constituency. For one year you would have spent Sh24million and for\nthe next four years before 2022 polls, you will have coughed out Sh96million,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe salary of a governor is Sh1.5million which in 60 months (5years )\nwill be Sh90million.Where will you get the balance to ensure you recover your\ncampaign money. This is the genesis of why politicians after getting elected,\nthey swindle the tax payers money to recover campaign money,\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the BBI meeting at Bukhungu, he kidnapped himself so that he\ncannot join Tanga Tanga MPs at Bomani grounds in Mumias town for a parallel\npresser. He caused anxiety and even his bodyguard recorded a statement over a missing\nperson at Shianda Police station on January 18, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MPs led by Didmus Barasa (Kimilili), John Waluke (Sirisia) Dan Wanyama\n(Webuye West), Justus Murunga (Matungu), Charles Gimose (Vihiga), Ex Sports\nCabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa and Ex Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale led his\nconstituent to look for him in vain only to resurface the following day that he\nwas having fun in Kisumu. He was afraid of being removed as Chief Whip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"258\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/unnamed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-844\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/unnamed.jpg 512w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/unnamed-300x151.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Benjamin Washiali<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><em> And now Washiali\u2019s political career is crumbling after being dehorned  his Chief Whip post when he rebelled against President Uhuru Kenyatta.  He was replaced by his neighbour, Navakholo MP Emmanuel Wangwe to who he  has branded him as a traitor. He has dropped his governorship bid and  even he fear losing his Mumias East parliamentary seat. <\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And now Washiali\u2019s political career is crumbling after being dehorned his\nChief Whip post when he rebelled against President Uhuru Kenyatta. He was\nreplaced by his neighbour, Navakholo MP Emmanuel Wangwe to who he has branded\nhim as a traitor. He has dropped his governorship bid and even he fear losing\nhis Mumias East parliamentary seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With Ruto\u2019s political ambitions at doldrums, who is the political godfather of Washiali,\nhis political career is also in limbo. Washiali\u2019s political career seems to\nhave reached its peak but time will tell.
