What happened to me in\u00a0<strong>June 2017<\/strong>\u00a0nearly pushed me to the edge. I\u2019m sharing my story so that other women\u2014especially those dealing with\u00a0<em>mpango wa kando<\/em>\u00a0(mistresses)\u2014can learn something from my experience.<\/p>\n<p>I got married in\u00a0<strong>2007<\/strong>\u00a0in a church wedding. My husband was working as an accountant at a government office in\u00a0<strong>Dar es Salaam<\/strong>, and I joined him after our marriage. Life started well. Though I was unemployed at the time, he provided for us, and we were blessed with three children between\u00a0<strong>2008 and 2014<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<strong>2015<\/strong>, I secured a teaching job in Arusha under the government. This meant relocating while my husband remained in Dar. We agreed that he would visit over weekends, and at first, he did\u2014every end of the month without fail.<\/p>\n<p>But in\u00a0<strong>2016<\/strong>, he was transferred to\u00a0<strong>Mtwara<\/strong>, and things began to change. The distance made visits less frequent. He went from visiting monthly to not coming for three straight months. The last time he came, he seemed different. He had locked his phone\u2014something he had never done before. When I asked, he snapped, \u201cWhy are you monitoring me? I knew something wasn\u2019t right.<\/p>\n<p>The following month, he never came. I called and asked what was going on, and he just said, \u201cWork has kept me busy.\u201d I waited a few weeks, but my gut told me to travel to Mtwara and find out for myself.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t tell him I was coming.<\/p>\n<p>I arrived around\u00a0<strong>10pm<\/strong>. I knew his house from when I had helped him move in. Before knocking, I heard voices from inside. A woman was laughing, and then I heard moaning and my husband\u2019s voice saying things I cannot forget.<\/p>\n<p>I felt sick.<\/p>\n<p>I knocked. No answer. I banged on the door and shouted, \u201c<strong>Joseph! Is this how you treat your wife?!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He eventually opened the door. Inside, there was a light-skinned woman in a towel. My heart broke. When I confronted him, he yelled, \u201cWho told you to come here?! Go back to Arusha and don\u2019t return!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman left quietly, and I was forced to sleep on the couch.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, he gave me back my wedding ring and said, \u201cYou\u2019re shapeless. Whether you like it or not, I\u2019m marrying her.\u201d Then he told me to leave.<\/p>\n<p>I went back home crushed and in tears.<\/p>\n<p>Two months later, I heard he had officially married the woman. He blocked my calls and completely cut communication with me and the children. I was alone\u2014paying school fees, rent, and taking care of the kids with my teacher\u2019s salary.<\/p>\n<p>I tried praying. Nothing changed.
