{"id":590,"date":"2020-04-17T07:41:44","date_gmt":"2020-04-17T07:41:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/?p=590"},"modified":"2020-04-17T07:41:44","modified_gmt":"2020-04-17T07:41:44","slug":"opinion-polls-elsie-muhandapeninah-mukabane-in-cut-throat-fight-for-the-women-rep-seat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=590","title":{"rendered":"Opinion Polls: Elsie Muhanda,Peninah Mukabane in cut throat fight for the Women Rep seat"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kakamega<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Wilson Abiri and Collins Matubwi<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With only two years remaining to the 2022 General Elections,\nbattle lines have already been drawn in the race to clinch the much coveted\nseat of the Kakamega Women Representative Seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Already women leaders in the county who are interested in\nthe seat have started making inroads to solidify their support base ahead of\n2022 using different campaign strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if elections was to be held today, the current Kakamega\nWomen Representative Elsie Muhanda will still be re-elected owing to the\nsupport she enjoys across the county.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"635\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/80121161_2415302891930160_685231078247497728_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/80121161_2415302891930160_685231078247497728_o.jpg 960w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/80121161_2415302891930160_685231078247497728_o-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/80121161_2415302891930160_685231078247497728_o-768x508.jpg 768w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/80121161_2415302891930160_685231078247497728_o-696x460.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Kakamega Women Representative Elsie Muhanda<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an opinion poll that was commissioned by the County\nSplash, an online news platform that was conducted between March 13<sup>th<\/sup>\n\u2013 April 7<sup>th<\/sup> 2020 placed Ms. Muhanda at position one with 21.71 per\ncent (812 votes) of the total sampled population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of 3,742 respondents were reached through telephone\ninterviews, online survey, impromptu interviews and through filling questionnaires.\nMuhanda was closely followed by her political nemesis Peninah Mukabane who\ngarnered 805 votes representing 21.53 per cent of the total votes tally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/index-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-591\"\/><figcaption><em><strong>Peninah Mukabane &#8211; Gender Adviser, Kakameega County<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The margin between Muhanda and Ms. Mukabane, the current\nGender advisor in Governor Wycliffe Oparanya\u2019s office was 0.18 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Renowned broadcaster Lydia Pamela Inyangala alias Senje got\n676 votes (18.07 per cent) to clinch the third position followed at a distant\nfourth position with nominated Senator Naomi Shiyonga who garnered 327 votes\n(8.73 per cent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;Sarah Netiah, a\nnominated MCA at the County Assembly of Kakamega scooped the fifth position\nwith 238 votes (6.35 per cent) followed by Hadija Juma Nganyi at the sixth\nposition with 167 votes (4.46 per cent) and Former Nominated Senator Daisy\nKanaiza Nyongesa was at the seventh position with 73 votes (1.94 per cent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"442\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200415-WA0085.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-592\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200415-WA0085.jpg 720w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200415-WA0085-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200415-WA0085-696x427.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Lydia Inyangala<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nancy Mudeheli got 57 votes (1.53 votes) at position eight\nfollowed by Anne Nambiro, a Nominated MCA at the County Assembly of Kakamega at\nposition nine with 48 votes (1.28 per cent) whereas Roselidah Andambi, also a\nnominated MCA was ranked at the tenth position with 34 votes (0.90 per cent).\nUtmost 13.50 per cent (505 votes) of the sampled population were undecided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/naomi.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/naomi.jpg 225w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/naomi-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Senator Naomi Shiyonga <\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Analysis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Muhanda, the incumbent Woman legislator as a wide network\nacross the county courtesy of her programs like the \u2018Tumaini Scholars\u2019 where\nshe has taken back to school over 500 young mothers back to school using the\nAffirmative Action Funds. Muhanda been distributing tents, umbrellas, farm\ninputs as well as facemasks to fight the Coronavirus pandemic. This activities\nhave seen her traverse the entire county thus becoming a darling to many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She is well endowed with resources as well as having\npolitical goodwill from political luminaries like ODM leader Raila Odinga and\nMr. Oparanya. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"567\" height=\"542\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200415-WA0081.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200415-WA0081.jpg 567w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200415-WA0081-300x287.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Sarah Netia<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, it may not be a walk in the park as she will have to battle it out with  Senator Shiyonga for the ODM nomination slot in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Mukabane, she has good managerial skills having held plum positions like the County Executive Committee (CECM) for Environment as well as Agriculture in the first tenure of Governor Oparanya. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"618\" height=\"833\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200415-WA0083.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-596\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200415-WA0083.jpg 618w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200415-WA0083-223x300.jpg 223w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>Hadija Juma Nganyi<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was also during her time as the CECM for Health that the construction of the 750- bed capacity Kakamega County Teaching and Referral hospital came to fruition. She is also blessed with oratory skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given her current role as the Gender Advisor in Governor\nOparanya\u2019s office, she has made a name for herself by fighting against teenage\npregnancy and defilement in the county. Her name is present in at least nine\nsub counties as per the opinion polls as well as being endowed with resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"229\" height=\"220\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/daisy.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-597\"\/><figcaption><em><strong>Ex Senator Daisy Kanaiza Nyongesa<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the veteran Journalist, Lydia Inyangala, she has come\nsecond in two consecutive General Elections of 2013 and 2017. This gives her an\nupper hand ahead of the rest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, her greatest undoing is that after every elections,\nshe disappears from the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naomi Shiyonga who has been among the top financiers of ODM\nactivities in the country enjoys the support of the party. This complicates the\nODM nominations in the 2022 elections as the party may reward her with the\nticket due to her loyalty to the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"445\" height=\"541\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200415-WA0078.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200415-WA0078.jpg 445w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200415-WA0078-247x300.jpg 247w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Roselidah Andambi<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Shiyonga is also endowed with resources and enjoys\ncomparative advantage ahead of the rest as she comes from the rich Malava\nvoting bloc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the sampled population claimed that she has lost\ntouch with the ground since she is not generous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"437\" height=\"834\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200415-WA0086.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200415-WA0086.jpg 437w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200415-WA0086-157x300.jpg 157w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 437px) 100vw, 437px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Nancy Mudeheli<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hadija Nganyi enjoys the support of the Wanga rich voting\nbloc though her dalliance with the Deputy President William Ruto is working\nagainst her candidature unless she will use another party apart from Jubilee.\nShe is also financially unstable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sarah Netiah after being nominated as an MCA lost touch with\nthe ground given that she has not carried any activity in the county. She is\nalso not endowed with resources and running a spirited campaign may prove an\nuphill task for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/anne.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/anne.jpg 225w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/anne-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>Anne Nambiro<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Daisy Nyongesa, she still has her networks across the\ncounty having been the ODM youth leader prior to the 2013 elections as well as\na name she earned for herself after serving as a nominated senator for five\nyears.
