Counties require\n20,000 medics to effectively deal with the spread of Covid-19 pandemic and save\nlives, Chairman Council of Governors (CoG) Wycliffe Oparanya has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oparanya pointed out\nthat counties were in need of health workers in various cadres to fill the gaps\nin public hospitals across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cThe hiring of additional 5500 medical staff\nto beef up the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic is a move in the right\ndirection,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The medics who will be\nhired during the exercise will be awarded a three-year contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Governor Wycliffe Oparanya<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is good that the medics will be given a longer contract to serve meaning that after we overcome the pandemic they will still be there to fill the gap and but I urge counties to consider absorbing them permanently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: \u201cMost public\nhealth institutions face acute shortage of medical staff and there is need for\nthe number to be increased\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kakamega governor\nnoted that before the country was hit by the Covid-19 pandemic public hospital\nhad inadequate medical staff adding that the situation has worsened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oparanya urged\ncounties that will have financial muscles to hire more health workers to\nprovide support in combating the spread of coronavirus and save lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing the Press\nyesterday, Oparanya assured medics that counties prioritized their lives in the\nfight against the spread of the Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that more\nPersonal Protective Equipment had arrived in the country from abroad for\ndistributions to counties to protect medics against threats of contracting the\nvirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am happy to inform our medics who have been sacrificing to save lives that the PPEs are with us and next the shortage of the same will be a thing of the past,\u201d he added. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Oparanya noted that in\nthe beginning KEMSA were the only body that provided the PPEs but they were\noverwhelmed by the demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am happy to inform\nour medics who have been sacrificing to save lives that the PPEs are with us\nand next the shortage of the same will be a thing of the past,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oparanya added that\nthe outbreak of Covid-19 had devastating economic effect of Kenyans adding that\nthe poor are had hit as they are faced with starvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that counties\nshould put more emphasis on provision of food to the vulnerable members of the\ncommunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cProvision of food to\nthe vulnerable should be the next agenda of counties to save them from\nstarvation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The governor appealed\nto traders not to take advantage of the high demand for food to increase prices\nof the commodity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that this is\nthe time the country needed sacrifice and support of all to win the war against\nthe spread of Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
