Last year the university recorded the\nhighest number of deaths of both Academic staff and students <\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has finally kicked\nout Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (Mmust) Council Chairman\nDr Jeremy Bundi and replaced him with Dr Jane Musangi Mutua.<\/p>\n\n\n\nDr Jane Musangi, the new Masinde Muliro University Council Chairperson<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Dr Bundi who together with other council members namely, Don\nRiaroh, Vayonda Sirmah, Joyce Nderitu, Dr Samson Muchelule, David Matende\n(Ministry of Education Rep) and Dorothy Kimeu (Treasury Rep) were all sent\npacking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bundi\u2019s efforts to use Statehouse operatives to have him\ntenure of office renewed did not bore any fruits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Magoha did not renew their second term in office after running\ndown the university to its lowest ebb, orchestrating leadership wrangles\nbetween the university management and the workers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, Prof Magoha\nvide Gazette Notice No. 2365 dated March 20, this year, appointed Dr Musangi\nfor a three year period to run the affairs of the university. Other council\nmembers are Stephen Mutoro, the Cofek Secretary General, Connie Okwisa Mogaka,\nJoshua Onyango Ogango and Gad Gathu Kiragu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Cabinet Secretary of Education appoints Dr Jane Musangi\nas the Chairperson for the council of Masinde Muliro University of Science and\nTechnology (Mmust), for a period of three years with effect from March 10,\u201d\nread part of Magoha\u2019s gazette notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Bundi was working in cohorts with the university\u2019s unions\nnamely, the Universities Academic Staff (Uasu), Kenya Universities Staff Union\n(Kusu) and Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals\nand Allied Workers (Kudheiha) to fight the administration of the late Ex Vice\nChancellor, Prof Fredrick Otieno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prof Otieno\u2019s untimely death was largely attributed to the\nfrustrations the Council and the Unions had subjected him to and there (Council)\nrefusal to give him a second tenure in office. <\/p>\n\n\n\nPallbearers carry a casket with the remains of the late Ex Mmust VC Prof Fredrick Otieno<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
This was evident when Amb. Amina Mohamed, the then Education\nCabinet Secretary, revoked Bundi\u2019s appointment and appointment Dr Musangi to Mmust.\nHer stint at the helm of leadership was short lived after Bundi rallied\nuniversity union representatives to file a case in court that saw her appointment\nrevoked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She had appointed Bundi as Chairman of council for Pwani University for a\nperiod of one year. Amina also revoked the appointment of Kossiom Frank Ole\nKibelekenya as a member of Mmust university council and replaced him with Dr\nAhmed Mohamed Diriye for a period of three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Mr Kossiom resigned in protest in\nmid-January citing \u2018frustrations\u2019 from the Education Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier, the unions stormed a Council meeting that was being\nchaired by Dr Musangi and tried evicting her and then acting VC Prof Joseph\nBosire did not stop them from disrupting a council meeting. Later, it was discovered\nthat Bosire was also working with the unions to frustrate the new council\nchair.<\/p>\n\n\n\nOnzere Mulongo,the KUSU boss with hornspeaker at a past event<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
The unions wanted Bundi back at Mmust so that he can use\nBosire in disregard of the law to employ some members of the union who had been\nsacked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They were to be hired back to the university through the\nBuilding Bridges Initiative (BBI) that was started by Bosire. He too as kicked\nout unceremoniously and replaced by the current Acting VC Prof Asenath Sigot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other top management positions at the institution are being\nheld in acting capacity with boardroom wars that rocked the university council\nmaking it difficult for them to be replaced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Prof Charles Mutai the current acting Deputy Vice Chancellor\n(DVC) in charge of Planning and Research (PRI) took over from Prof Egara Kabaji\nwhose tenure ended on January 23, this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prof Josephine Ngaira, former DVC for Academics and Students Affairs tenure\nexpired in October last year and was replaced by Dr. Eng. Bernadette Sabuni\nalso in an acting capacity and Dr Patrick Ojera is holding the DVC Finance\ndocket after then DVC Prof Joseph Rotich was appointed Vice Chancellor for\nLaikipia University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Academic Staff at the university on Friday were in celebrations after\nlearning that Dr Bundi has finally left Mmust.<\/p>\n\n\n\nDr Jeremy Bundi<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
However, there is a rumour the union members are also planning to move to\ncourt to stop Dr Musangi from assuming office and that they want Magoha to re-appoint\nBundi as the university\u2019s council Chairman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cRumour has it that union members are planning to move to court to stop the\nnew chair of the council from assuming her roles. Kindly, be informed that Bundi\nwill not chair Mmust council again. Not in his lifetime,\u201d read a post in a\nWhatsApp group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\u201cUnions cannot purport to run affairs of the University. Who is the union\nwithout members support, if you know what I mean, tarumbeta na resistance.\nCursed be my clan if we allow Bundi to stay on even for a minute,\u201d read another\npost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The move has caused anxiety among the staff and are now threatening to stage\na demo against the union leaders on grounds that they are being used by Bundi\nto paralyse operations at the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
