Kenya\u2019s long serving former President Daniel\narap Moi died at the age of 95 years while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi\nhospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Moi who ruled for 24 years changed the\ncountry\u2019s political landscape courtesy of his iron fist rule and handed power\nto erstwhile President Mwai Kibaki who ruled the country for ten years and then\nsucceeded by Uhuru in the divisive 2013 general elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
President Uhuru Kenyatta made the announcement\nin a presidential proclamation in which he stated that the ex-statesman died in\npresence of his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe late second President of Kenya Daniel arap Moi<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
“It is with profound sadness and sorrow\nthat I announce the passing of a Great African Statesman, Mzee Daniel Toroitich\narap Moi, the Second President of the Republic of Kenya. His Excellency the\nFormer President passed on at the Nairobi Hospital on the early morning of this\n4th February, 2020; in the presence of his family,” read Uhuru\u2019s\nstatement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The late Mzee had been in hospital for more\nthan one month until the time for his death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
President\nUhuru Kenyatta has ordered a period of national mourning until a state funeral\nis held, on a date not yet to be confirmed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It is with profound sadness and sorrow that I announce the passing of a Great African Statesman, Mzee Daniel Toroitich arap Moi, the Second President of the Republic of Kenya. His Excellency the Former President passed on at the Nairobi Hospital on the early morning of this 4th February, 2020; in the presence of his family,” read Uhuru\u2019s statement. <\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
The Kenya Defense Forces has also taken hold\nof all operations concerning the late President’s burial program until a state funeral\nis carried out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And in Kakamega, the locals paid tribute to\nthe family of the late president terming him an astute leader who changed the\neducation system of Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They also remembered Mzee Moi of Nyayo milk,\nHarambee spirit and a staunch leader who called upon Kenyans to always conserve\nthe environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe late second President of Kenya Daniel arap Moi<\/strong><\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Kenya African National Union(KANU) Kakamega\noffices were packed with mourners who came in to share and celebrate what the national\nicon did to them during his 24 years\u2019 reign. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kakamega KANU chairperson, Chacha Weche, said\nhe was saddened by the death of his long term friend, Mzee Moi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI feel so sad today after waking up to the sad\nnews of former president’s death. My condolences go to the family through this\ntroubled times,\u201d said Weche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The KANU chairperson also said that Moi\nbrought a lot of development to Kakamega region including the establishing\nNyayo tea zone, Mumias Sugar Company together with Moi showground Kakamega.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But even as many celebrate him, there are a few\nwho think otherwise. In 1982, Moi’s government pushed a constitutional\namendment through Parliament that made Kenya effectively a one-party state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
