{"id":4218,"date":"2020-02-04T15:10:10","date_gmt":"2020-02-04T15:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/?p=304"},"modified":"2020-02-04T15:10:10","modified_gmt":"2020-02-04T15:10:10","slug":"ruto-government-to-cater-for-hospital-and-burial-expenses-of-14-dead-pupils-of-kakamega-primary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=4218","title":{"rendered":"Ruto: Government to cater for hospital and burial expenses of 14 dead pupils of Kakamega Primary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kakamega<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Wilson Abiri <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>14 pupils died after a stampede <\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>They were aged between 8-12 years <\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>The dead were five boys and nine girls <\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>Bodies are being preserved at Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary <\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>Kakamega Primary School has been closed down for one week<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>DP Ruto says government to cater for hospital and burial expenses <\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deputy President William Ruto has said that the government\nwill cater for the hospital and burial expenses for the 14 pupils of Kakamega\nPrimary School who died on Monday following a stampede.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ruto said he had been sent by President Uhuru Kenyatta who is\ncurrently in the United States to come and condole with parents and relatives\nof the deceased and assure them of government support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/DSC_7200-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-306\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>Deputy President William Ruto (centre) at Kakamega primary school -Photo\/Wilson Abiri\/County Splash<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Ruto was speaking at the institution where he said a\ncommittee has already been put in place under the supervision of Governor\nWycliffe Oparanya to organise how the dead pupils will be given a befitting\nsendoff next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u201cThe committee has\nofficials from both the national and county government who will be given\nresources to ensure all the hospital bills as wells as burial expenses are\ntaken care of by the government,\u2019 said Ruto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Deputy President said the stampede around 4.40 pm when\nthe pupils were going home. He said a total of 14 pupils lost their lives out\nof which 37 of them were treated and discharged, adding that 46 were injured\nand currently undergoing treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/DSC_7110-678x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-307\"\/><figcaption><em><strong>Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha (left) and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya (right) at Kakamega Primary School -Photo\/Wilson Abiri\/County Splash<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that two other pupils were still at the intensive\nCare Unit (ICU), 3 are in surgical wards and three others have been admitted at\nthe general wards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fourteen dead pupils consisted of five boys and nine\ngirls aged between 8-12 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kakamega primary has a total of 3128 pupils in the primary\nsection with an average of 64 pupils per stream distributed across 51\nclassrooms. The primary school also has 296 pupils in the ECDE section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe pupils will remain at home so as to allow the\ninvestigating agencies to final their investigations and will report back on\nMonday. The agencies will also investigate on the safety standards of the three\nstorey building and also audit its structural design,\u201d said Dr Ruto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/DSC_7093-678x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-308\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>An elderly woman is being consoled after learning the demise of her granddaughter at Kakamega County Teaching and Hospital mortuary -Photo\/Wilson Abiri\/County Splas<\/em><\/strong>h<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The affected pupils were from classes four and five in the first\nand second floor of the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday morning, Education CS George Magoha together with\nBasic Education Principal Secretary Dr Belio Kipsang and Government Spokesman\nCyrus Oguna visited the primary school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Magoha assured the bereaved families that the government is\nkeen in knowing the real cause of the stampede and ruled out the narrative that\nthe pupils were running on the stairs, slipped and fell down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Magoha insisted that he had visited the school sometimes in\nDecember last year and witnessed pupils going up and down of the staircases\nsmoothly without any commotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am very familiar with this school, I inspected the school\nless than two months ago. It is one of the finest primary schools in the\nrepublic led by one of the finest teachers in the republic, I am perplexed as\nto what could have cost the stampede, as a Christian I only want the truth.\u201d\nMagoha stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Governor Oparanya said they will work closely with the national\ngovernment to ensure the little angels are given a befitting sendoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG-20200204-WA0042.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-309\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>The late Catherine Aloo,10, during her birthday. She was in class five at Kakamega primary school-Photo\/Wilson Abiri\/County Splash<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u201cI also want to thank\nthe doctors and nurses who worked tirelessly with us throughout the night to\nensure that our children get proper medical attention out of which more than\nthirty pupils were treated and allowed to go back home yesterday evening.\u201d\nOparanya stated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oparanya appealed to the public to remain calm since the\ninvestigations were underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale raised shocking claims\nof the manner in which the stampede happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Khalwale, a medical doctor by profession said he was shocked\nwhy none of the 14 fallen angels didn\u2019t bleed anywhere, saying he suspects a\nfoul play in the whole incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An agitated Khalwale cited unbecoming patterns of turning the\nschool into a worship Centre by some questionable denominations in Kakamega\ntown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He asked CS Magoha to intervene on the matter saying public\nschools are learning centres and should not be made or hired by people as\nplaces of worship as their worship patterns are questionable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders were accompanied Kakamega Deputy\nGovernor, Prof Philip Kutima, Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali, Bernard Shinali\n(Ikolomani), Bishop Titus Khamala (Lurambi), and Western Regional Commissioner\nAnne Ng\u2019etich, Peris Kimani, the Western Regional Police Commander and other\nsecurity officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/7W7A0902-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-310\"\/><figcaption><em><strong>Lucy Mugamazi diplaying photos of her late firstborn daughter, Catherine Aloo -Photo\/Wilson Abiri\/County Splash<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the Kakamega County Teaching and Hospital\nmortuary, parents and relatives of the departed pupils were wailing\nuncontrollably upon seeing the lifeless bodies of their children at the morgue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least fifteen people fainted when they saw\nthe dead pupils lying at the morgue and were attended to by first aiders from\nSt John\u2019s Ambulance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The police and Kakamega County askaris had a\nrough time in controlling the multitude that had gathered at the mortuary to\nsee the dead bodies of the pupils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lucy Mugamaji, 30, is among the parents who\nlost their children. Her 10 year old first born daughter, Catherine Aloo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI saw last my daughter when alive on Monday\nat 6.10am and parted ways. At 5.30pm,the boda boda rider who normally picks\ninformed me that there has been an accident at Kakamega Primary and that he has\nbeen informed my daughter is among those injured,\u201d said Ms Mugamaji.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG-20200204-WA0039.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-311\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mugamaji said she rushed to the hospital and\ncould not see her and informed the husband to check at Nala nursing home,\nsaying upon reaching, she found her already dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diana Atamba lost her only son,Fidel Shikhuyu\nwho was in class five. Justus Shikhuyu,Fideli\u2019s father died when he was barely\ntwo years in 2011.
