{"id":4217,"date":"2020-01-30T14:02:52","date_gmt":"2020-01-30T14:02:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/?p=297"},"modified":"2020-01-30T14:02:52","modified_gmt":"2020-01-30T14:02:52","slug":"margaret-kenyatta-launches-national-guide-on-elimination-of-cervical-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=4217","title":{"rendered":"Margaret Kenyatta launches national guide on elimination of cervical cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By PSCU<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NAIROBI <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First Lady Margaret Kenyatta today launched a cervical cancer advocacy guide\ndeveloped to empower and sensitize communities on cervical cancer prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The advocacy guide, the first of its kind, was formulated by the Ministry of\nHealth and partners including the National Cancer Control Program, Stop\nCervical Cancer Initiative, Office of the First Lady and Beyond Zero Initiative\namong others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking in Nairobi when she launched the guide at the close of a two-day\nhigh level advocacy cervical cancer workshop for county first ladies and other\nkey stakeholders, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta called for concerted efforts to\neliminate cervical cancer in Kenya by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The workshop with the theme, \u2018I am and I will\u2019, was geared towards equipping\nstakeholders with knowledge, skills and information to champion the fight\nagainst cervical cancer at the county level across the country. The theme is in\nline with the campaign theme for 2019 to 2021 World Cancer Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur focus today is therefore appropriate \u2013 to urge partners to work\ntogether and identify effective ways to increase women voluntary participation\nin cervical cancer prevention programs,\u201d the First Lady said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guide outlines key steps for advocacy to eliminate cervical cancer that\ninclude the use of evidence to frame the agenda, identification of instruments\nfor community engagement and resource mobilization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/pscu-2-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-299\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guide is aligned to the National Cancer Control Strategy 2017-2022 which\nenvisions a Kenyan population with low burden of cancer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Renewing her commitment in the fight against cervical cancer, the First Lady\nemphasized the need to scale up prevention through vaccination and screening as\nthe disease is treatable with 100 percent recovery if detected early. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is my hope that the meeting has identified bottlenecks and come up with\neffective and sustainable solutions to support the decentralized services for\ncervical cancer prevention, treatment and management,\u201d the First Lady said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/ps.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-300\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although cervical cancer is curable, records show that nine women die from\ncervical cancer daily in the country making the disease the leading cancer\nstrain among Kenyan women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKenya, which is currently ranked in the top 20 countries with the highest\nrates of cervical cancer, has joined the global call for elimination of\ncervical cancer by 2030,\u201d the First Lady pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moved by stories of untold suffering, emotional trauma and increased\nfinancial burden caused by the disease that threatens women&#8217;s right to health,\nthe First Lady expressed the need to address the issue of affordability on both\nscreening and treatment especially in low income communities where limited\nresources and infrastructure constrain health systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She supported the government\u2019s call for coordinated multi-sectoral efforts\nto implement the 90-70-90 targets to achieve a reduction in mortality from\ncervical cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/psf.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-301\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe aim is to have 90% of girls fully vaccinated with the HPV vaccine, 70%\nof eligible women screened and 90% of women identified with pre-cancer or\ncancer treated appropriately,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The First Lady thanked national and county governments for setting up county\nchemotherapy centers and radiotherapy facilities in Mombasa, Nakuru, Garissa,\nKisii and at Kenyatta University Referral Hospital saying, \u201cAll these efforts\nimprove service delivery for cervical cancer screening, prevention and\ntreatment&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Health CAS Dr Rashid Aman and County First Lady Association Chairperson Mrs\nNazi Kibwana commended the First Lady for her leading role in the promotion of\nhealth and wellbeing of children, girls and women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/pscu-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-302\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a communiqu\u00e9 read by Kwale County First Lady Christine Mvurya, the\nadvocacy workshop resolved to consolidate their efforts in combating cervical\ncancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other speakers included World Health Organiation representative Dr Rudi Eggers and Kisumu County First Lady Mrs Dorothy Nyong\u2019o who spoke on behalf of the Kenya Network of Cancer Organizations and commended the Ministry of Health for launching the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine, a
