{"id":4216,"date":"2020-01-30T13:54:54","date_gmt":"2020-01-30T13:54:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/?p=291"},"modified":"2020-01-30T13:54:54","modified_gmt":"2020-01-30T13:54:54","slug":"ku-hospital-to-collaborate-with-university-of-manchester-in-cancer-treatment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=4216","title":{"rendered":"KU Hospital to collaborate with University of Manchester in cancer treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By PSCU<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NAIROBI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Uhuru Kenyatta today at State House, Nairobi held talks with visiting officials of the University of Manchester and Christie NHS Foundation where it was agreed to establish a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening healthcare sector in the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today\u2019s meeting was a follow up of the signing of an MoU between Kenya and\nthe two British institutions on the sidelines of the recent UK-Africa\ninvestment summit in London. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the partnership, the University of Manchester and Christie NHS\nFoundation Trust will collaborate with Kenyatta University Teaching Research\nand Referral Hospital (KUTRRH) in the prevention and management of\nnon-communicable diseases with special emphasis on cancer and mental health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement provides for the training as well as exchange of health\nprofessionals including Kenyan nurses who will get an opportunity to serve in\nBritain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kenya will benefit from a comprehensive skill upgrade programme for health\nexperts in specialist areas such as heart, kidney and cancer diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Kenyatta expressed gratitude to the UK officials saying their\ncoming to Kenya immediately after their London talks demonstrate a genuine\ndesire to partner with Kenya in the health sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/pscu-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-294\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>President Uhuru Kenyatta with officials from the University of Manchester -Photo\/PSCU <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said through this partnership, Kenya will receive support to establish a\ncancer centre of excellence at the KUTRRH. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur desire is not only to make Kenyatta University a Centre for Research\nand Treatment but also to reduce the costs in treatment of non-communicable\ndiseases,\u201d the President said noting that the cancer centre will be linked to\nregional hubs to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment of the disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The partnership between the two UK institutions and KUTRRH will go a long\naway in fulfilling President Kenyatta\u2019s promise to do everything in his power\nto bring down the costs of cancer treatment in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cancer is the third leading cause of death in Kenya, after infectious and\ncardiovascular diseases, and it is estimated that there are nearly 48,000 new\ncancer cases reported annually. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are building hospitals but we don\u2019t have the capacity that\u2019s why we seek\ncollaboration in training our people and build their capacity to provide\nadequate services to our people up to the grassroots,&#8221; the President said.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added: \u201cWe have to be strategic in how we will establish this partnership\nso that we can have a win-win for Kenya and the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking on behalf of the University of Manchester and the Christie NHS\nFoundation Prof Keith Brennan said his team is determined to ensure the\ncollaboration works for the good of two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are very grateful to be here soon after our engagement in the UK and we\nare looking forward to finalizing this historic venture,\u201d said Prof Keith who\nis also the Associate Dean for Internationalization at Manchester University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/pscu-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-295\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK officials will hold a series of meeting with Kenyatta University and\nKenya\u2019s Ministry of Health officials with the aim of kick-starting the\ncollaboration in coming months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides KUTRRH, the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) will be the\nother major beneficiary of the deal that will see appendages and radiotherapies\nestablished across the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Present during the State House meeting were outgoing Health CS Sicily\nKariuki, Kisii Governor James Ongwae and Health PS Susan Mochache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor Keith was accompanied by the University of Manchester Vice Dean for\nSocial Responsibility Prof Mahesh Nirmalan, the Christie NHS Foundation\nExecutive Medical Director Prof Christopher Harrison and the Director of\nChristie School of Oncology Professor Richard Cowan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By PSCU NAIROBI President Uhuru Kenyatta today at State House, Nairobi held talks with visiting officials of the University of Manchester and Christie NHS Foundation where it was agreed to establish a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening healthcare sector in the country.
