The first case of Corona Virus (Covid 19) has been confirmed\nin Kenya. This is according to Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Kagwe, the chairman of the National Emergency Response Committee\non Corona Virus Preparedness and Response while addressing the media in Nairobi\ntoday, he said the case was confirmed last night though the lady arrived in the\ncountry on March 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kagwe was accompanied by Cabinet Secretaries Joe Mucheru\n(ICT), James Macharia (Transport) and Najib Balala (Tourism).<\/p>\n\n\n\nHealth CS Mutahi Kagwe<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe is a Kenyan citizen who travelled back to Nairobi from the\nUSA via London in the United Kingdom on March 5 and self-quarantined. She was confirmed positive by the National Influenza\nCentre Laboratory at the National Public Health Laboratories of the Ministry of\nHealth,\u201d said Kagwe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The patient has been quarantined at the Kenyatta National\nHospital. All the people she was in contact with have been traced and currently\nundergoing tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
The Health CS said the patient is stable with her\ntemperatures having gone down to normal, saying she is eating and behaving and\nthat there was need for alarm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the Ministry of Health (MoH) has put in place\nmeasures to prevent the spread of the virus further that has now been declared\na pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO). \u201cKenyans are reminded that\nthe affected people experience normal mild illness but recover easily. The disease\ncan be severe to the elderly persons and those with chronic illness,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI have as the Minister for Health invoked the Public Health\nAct and direct that Kenyans to regularly and thoroughly wash their hands with\nsoap and water or use alcohol based hand sanitizers frequently, maintain one\nmetre distance between yourself or anyone sneezing, persons with a cough or\nsneeze to stay at home,\u201d said Mr Kagwe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
He called on Kenyans to maintain good respiratory hygiene by\ncovering their mouths when coughing and sneezing, saying those who will\nexperience symptoms like cough, fever and difficulties in breathing to stay at\nhome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe have suspended all public gatherings, meetings, all\nreligious crusades, games and all events that are of a huge public nature. Normal\nchurch services can go on so long as the church will provide hand sanitisers\nbefore the worshippers enter into the church. All school games and athletics\nhave been suspended but schools to continue until further notice,\u201d said the\nHealth CS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He directed that the Public transport to also provide hand\nsanitisers and tissue papers for the passengers to clean their hands before\nboarding the vehicles as well ensure the vehicles as clean so as to prevent the\nspread of the deadly virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe have suspended all visits to prisons for the next 30\ndays and Kenyans must not abuse social media platforms by spreading fear and panic,\nwe have placed travel restrictions in and outside the country,\u201d said Kagwe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said all Level (IV) hospitals across the country have\nisolation wards for Corona Virus victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, the death toll from an outbreak of coronavirus in\nItaly has jumped in the last 24 hours by 189 to 1,016, a rise of 23 percent,\nthe country’s Civil Protection Agency said on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Italy, millions are locked\ndown and hundreds of people have died from the coronavirus. But in South Korea,\nwhich was hit by the disease at about the same time, only a few thousand are\nquarantined and 67 people died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The World Health Organization\n(WHO) declared the outbreak a pandemic as Italy tightened its strict\nquarantine and the United States imposed a ban on flights to Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
More than 4,700 people have died and over\n128,000 have been infected globally, according to the WHO. About 68,000 victims\nhave recovered, according to Johns Hopkins University, which is tracking the\nvirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The escalating coronavirus emergency has sent\nstocks crashing to their worst losses in 30 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zhao Lijian, a top spokesman of the Chinese\ngovernment and senior foreign ministry official, posted on social media on Friday\na report published in a Canada-based conspiracy website suggesting that the\ncoronavirus originated from the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Just take a few minutes to read one\nmore article. This is so astonishing that it changed many things I used to\nbelieve in. Please retweet to let more people know about it,” Zhao wrote\non Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His post accompanied an article with the\nheadline: ‘A shocking update. Did The Virus Originate in the US?’<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier, Zhao also posted a video of the US\nCongress hearing, suggesting that the US Centers for Disease Control and\nPrevention was “caught on the spot” saying that “patient\nzero” began in the US. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Indonesia will temporarily ban the export of\nface masks to safeguard domestic supply amid the coronavirus outbreak, Reuters\nnews agency reported on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We will issue a temporary export ban\nfor mask products to meet demand from domestic industries and\nconsumers,” Trade Minister Agus Suparmanto told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
The ban will be kept in place until the\ngovernment is satisfied local supply is adequate, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prices for face masks have jumped in some\nparts of Indonesia as buyers stock up on protective supplies such as masks and\nhand sanitisers due to worries about the coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are an estimated 34 cases in Indonesia,\nwith one fatality and two recoveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Canadian Prime Minister Justin\nTrudeau’s wife, Sophie, has tested positive for the new coronavirus, according\nto the prime minister’s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trudeau’s office had earlier said that\nthe Canadian first lady returned from a speaking engagement in Britain and had\nmild flu-like symptoms, including a low fever, late on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The prime minister is quarantining\nhimself at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
