Sacred places were perceived to be\nholy places where gods of all kinds lived. Village elders occasionally visited\nthe places to seek advice and assistance on particular issues on behalf of the\ncommunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depending on the occasion, different\ntypes of sacrifices were offered in various types of sacred places, a practice\nspecifically conducted by selected elders to appease the gods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kapchekuk waterfall, found on the\nRiftvalley escarpments bordering Nandi and Kakamega counties, was such a place\namong the Nandi community. The place was feared by both locals and non-locals\ndue to the extraordinary activities that took place there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We used to bury our people\ndown the cliff, the mode of burial was by throwing the dead bodies down the\ncliff,” said Fredrick Cheslut, a village elder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Down the waterfall is a land full of\nrocks and caves that the Nandi people believed the gods lived inside and could\ncome out to take the dropped bodies for preparation for the second world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word Kap-chekuk means home to\nthe raven, which were brought by continues dropping of the bodies down the\ncliff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The special grass<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike other sacred places where\nonly animals were slaughtered, Kapchekuk had a special grass (suswet vamwaida)\nthat when rubbed produced oil. According to mzee Fredrick Cheslut, the gods\nused the oil to smear on the dead bodies before ushering them to the next\nworld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have several gods; of death,\nrain, and disease among others who were led by a supreme one, Cheptilil, after\na body was thrown down the waterfall, the god of death, would receive it,\nprepare it by washing it with water from the waterfall and smear it with the\noil from vamwaida grass,” Explained Cheslut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elderly men without families,\n(Ngatet), were tasked with the role of disposing the bodies. The move was to\nprotect the community from being haunted by curses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Curses are transferred from\none generation to the other following a family lineage, to avoid that, we opted\nto use impotent men, to prevent the curse that may befall the rest of the\ngeneration”, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from the oil extracted from\nvamwaida grass being used to prepare the bodies in readiness for the second\nworld, the grass combined with another one, sinedet (Periploca linearifolia)\nwere used to make bracelets that were worn during traditional wedding\nceremonies to protect the couple from \u2018bad eyes\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The bracelet tied the two\ntogether during the wedding, the combination was believed to poses supernatural\npowers that protected the couple from evil,” He said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last supper<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from Kapchekuk being used by\nthe Nandi people as a disposing place of their departed loved ones, the old who\nwere tired of living as well as patients suffering from long-term illness used\nthe place to commit suicide. They honored their last days on earth by singing\nand praying before throwing themselves down the cliff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The old would gather on top of\nthis cliff, they would mark their last celebration by singing and praying for\nthree days, the night before the fourth day, they would hold hands to form a\nsemicircle and throw themselves down the cliff,”, Said Joshua Kortei, a resident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suicidal mission was strictly\nperformed at night under the watch of the ngatets who later performed a ritual\nto ensure their souls are accepted in the second world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crying owl<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whereas old and tired people\ncommitted suicide at the cliff, those with chronic illnesses would be tied a\nlong rope around both legs and taken to the cliff-top. After three days, the\nrope would be pulled from the village, the patient was to respond by pulling it\nback to ascertain he is still alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCertain signs will have to pass\nbefore a patient is taken on top of the cliff, the cry of an owl at night was\nan example, an owl\u2019s cry symbolized death was approaching, this called for\nassembling those suffering from long term illnesses in the community and taken\nto the cliff,\u201d Said Kortei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A guard of sour milk was packed for\nthe sick, when the person survived the harsh conditions, like the cold and wild\nanimals, in the three days, they were to drink the milk and come back to the\nvillage, failure to do so, the ngatet would be sent to go and throw their body\ndown the cliff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cleansing<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After throwing the body, a flawless\nblack ram was slaughtered, its blood was then smeared around the place to\nappease the ancestors while its meat was eaten by the ngatet as way of\ncleansing themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA clean black ram was to be\nslaughtered, blood was spread around the place, its intestine was removed, the\nngatet would eat the meat and form a circle, they would step on top the\nintestines singing on loud voices while moving in a circular manner, by doing\nthis they were pleading with the ancestors to accept the just departed soul,\u201d\nSaid Cheslut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were to leave the place before\nthe sunrise and were received by the village elders outside the village, some\ncleansing ritual was done before being allowed to join the rest of the\ncommunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides being a burial place, a\npeace treaty between the Masais and the Nandis was once signed at Kapchekuk\nWaterfall, after both communities were adversely affected from land rivalry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turned tables\u00a0<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the advent of modern\ntechnology has ended the traditional way of burying the dead among the Nandis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This has greatly changed the\nperception of the area from the most feared sacred place to a tourist\nattraction site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have heard a lot about this place\nand so I came to witness this massive water fall and other adventurous things\nsuch as the ravens, caves, huge rocks and the forest,\u201d said Sada Jael a student\nfrom Masinde Muliro University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from local tourism, Kapchekuk has\nalso attracted many tourists from across the world hence enhanced the area\u2019s\neconomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“International tourists come to\nthis place to camp and look at this epic landscape that is a habitat for\nvarious flora and fauna” said David Khalukhana a self-proclaimed tour\nguide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the residents\u2019 call to the\nNandi County government is to intervene and ensure the area is well fenced and\nsuitable to attract more tourists that will boost the tourism industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
