Kakamega is one of the leading Counties in Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases with Shinyalu, Ikolomani, Khwisero, Matungu and Lugari Sub-Counties recording alarming rates. This is according to a study submitted to Kenya Health Information System by the health facility data.<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the gate of Matungu\nRural hospital from far could see a woman with her teenage daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 She looked stressed up and restless. I walked\ntowards her and after greeting her, I enquired what the problem was what had\nbrought them to the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rosemary Nabwire said\nthat she was at the hospital to seek medication after her daughter was defiled\nby a sex predator well known to the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy daughter who was\nclass eight pupil was defiled by an unknown person and later given herbs to\nterminate the pregnancy. He threatened to kill her if she revealed the act to\nanyone,\u201d said Nabwire<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nabwire said that when\nshe took her daughter for checkup at Matungu rural hospital, no tests were\nconducted for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I took my\ndaughter to Matungu Rural hospital no tests were performed on her. I was told\nto pay Sh500 which I didn\u2019t have for my daughter to get the services at the\nhospital,\u201d said Nabwire<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cApart from teenage pregnancies the rate at which these children will contract HIV aids is high. As private organizations fighting for children rights we are calling upon the county government to take such matters seriously since its affects the future generation,\u201d said Omolo<\/code><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Nabwire said that her\ndaughter is living in fear as the perpetrator poses death threats on her. She\nexplains that no action has been taken towards the perpetrator even after\nreporting to the necessary authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAm calling upon the\ncounty government to take the necessary action to arrest the culprit. My\ndaughter’s life is in danger. I was forced to take her away from this village\nand cut short her education because of her safety,\u201d said   Nabwire<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kakamega Law Courts<\/code><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Kakamega is one of the leading Counties\nin Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases with Shinyalu, Ikolomani, Khwisero,\nMatungu and Lugari Sub-Counties recording alarming rates. This is according to\na study submitted to Kenya Health Information System by the health facility\ndata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Against the backdrop, private\norganizations fighting for children rights at Matungu Sub County are calling\nupon the county government of Kakamega to take action towards those who defile\nchildren to prevent an increase of defilement cases in Matungu Sub county.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 20 cases are\nreported on a monthly basis. International Committee for the Development of\nPeople (CISP) and Matungu Rural Poverty Alleviation (MARPA) say they receive\nreports on defilement cases daily in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the  program coordinator,  Fredrick Omolo, defilement was rampant in\nMatungu than any other place in Kakamega.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese two\norganizations decided to conduct a mobile clinic to find out more cases of\nchild defilement and to educate the community on benefits of taking these cases\nto court. We realized that teenage pregnancies and defilement cases are\nincreasing daily with more than 20 cases reported every month.\u201d said Omolo<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Omolo reported that\nwhen such cases occur and the child is taken to hospital or dispensaries around\nthere is no essential things like pre-exposure prophylaxis PREP and post\n\u2013exposure prophylaxis PEP to prevent victims from contracting HIV and AIDS<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe talked to the\nvictims and we were shocked to be told that when the go to hospitals they are\ntold to go back home and come back after two weeks for a pregnancy test with no\nPREP nor PEP and no test kits. Lacking such essential commodities in our\nhospitals is so alarming,\u201d said Omolo <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: \u201cApart from\nteenage pregnancies the rate at which these children will contract HIV aids is\nhigh. As private organizations fighting for children rights we are calling upon\nthe county government to take such matters seriously since its affects the future\ngeneration,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen such matters are reported in our office, we always refer such matters to the court of law and the perpetrator faces the law. We have a problem with our community,\u201d said Abongo <\/code><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

 Omolo advised\nparents to be vigilant on their children and not to allow such matters to be\nsolved at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matungu Children\u2019s\nOfficer, Cynthia Abongo confirmed that most of the hospitals especially\ndispensaries they are lacking test kits, PREP and PEP hence leading to high\nnumber of HIV infections<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs a department we\nare aware that there are no essential commodities like PREP, PEP and testing\nkits in our hospitals and dispensaries and it is an issue that is nationwide,\nas an office the only thing is to sensitize the community on HIV and early\npregnancies,\u201d said Abongo<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abongo condemned\nkangaroo courts saying that they are the main reason why children defilement\ncases are increasing in Matungu Sub County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen such matters are\nreported in our office, we always refer such matters to the court of law and\nthe perpetrator faces the law. We have a problem with our community,\u201d said\nAbongo<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added: \u201cWe have\nkangaroo courts where people don\u2019t want to report such matters; they prefer\nsolving the matter at home which is the main reason for high caseloads\nregarding early pregnancy and teenage pregnancy.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
