{"id":3138,"date":"2022-11-24T10:40:01","date_gmt":"2022-11-24T10:40:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/?p=3138"},"modified":"2022-11-24T10:40:01","modified_gmt":"2022-11-24T10:40:01","slug":"journalists-get-trained-on-countering-disinformation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=3138","title":{"rendered":"Journalists get trained on countering disinformation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><code>By Seliphar Musungu, Kisumu<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kenya Correspondents Association (KCA) has identified 70\njournalists who are undergoing training to generate stories to counter\ndisinformation that is rampant in the society with the increasing usage of\nsocial media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><code> Oloo Janak : \u201cWe are building a community of journalists that is sensitive to the needs of the society,\"<\/code><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The association has engaged journalists from Kakamega,\nKisumu, Kisii and Mombasa Counties in the programme that is supported by\nDeutsch Akademie, A Germany Institution, on capacity building Rural\nCorrespondents and journalists across the country on tackling disinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KCA chair William Oloo Janak said, during a two-day training\nfor Western and Nyanza journalists, that some of the rural communities lack the\ncapacity to determine information that is genuine and what is not yet they\nconsume a lot from online media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/janak.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/janak.jpg 960w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/janak-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/janak-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/janak-696x392.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption><strong><code>Oloo Janak - KCA National Chairman<\/code><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said disinformation subverts the truth causing harm and\nconflict in the society just as was witnessed during the August general\nelection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trained journalists will identify areas in their\ncounties on disinformation and produce stories with long shelf life to counter\nthem by ensuring they are factual and pass the test of fact checking tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The association has identified a pool of fact checkers and\neditors who will be assigned to the identified journalists to support them in\nwriting quality stories on disinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said journalists are expected to produce stories on\ntopical issues from economics, political, environmental, and social among other\nareas which they will share through their media houses, social media handles\nand their own blogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are coming from the general election and there are\nissues that were driven by different interest groups on disinformation, some of\nthem were campaigning for individual politicians or parties, they used a lot of\ninfluencers and this brought a lot of confusion for some people causing\ndivision,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program is going to add value to what the rest of the\nmedia industry is doing on fake news, misinformation and disinformation due to\nthe rise of technology and social media usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program comes at a time when the media environment is\nchanging with KCA focusing on mentoring journalists to survive long in the\nchallenging field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u201cWe are building a community of journalists that is\nsensitive to the needs of the society\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said that the association is further finalizing an\nengagement with the Constructive Institute on emerging brands of Journalism\nwhere journalists illuminate the issues in the community by telling community\nservice stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJournalism of the future is constructive journalism which\nfocuses on building bridges with the community or serving the community\ninterests and not seeing the community as backward. Constructive journalism\ndoes not seek to offend and therefore the Media should not train one to be\ncombative or to be an activist journalist,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said that with the rise of social media, the journalism\nenvironment is changing and journalists should therefore shift to second day\njournalism also known as story behind a story journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Janak called for collaboration and cooperation of the\ngovernment agencies to ease the work of journalists across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll stakeholders in this country must work together to\nensure that the media is protected, the freedom of expression and the freedom\nof the press is guaranteed as provided for in the constitution, so that journalists\nare able to work without fear, intimidation and are facilitated to ensure they\ndo the sacred duty of informing the public,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the association is moving forward to conduct a\nsurvey of all the media houses next year to establish the levels of\nremuneration for journalists and the conditions under which different\njournalists operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will take various forms of action including litigation\nif negotiations fail. We do not require a situation where the journalists are\nhired on the phone. We need to read their contracts and we urge journalists to\ngive us information about their welfare. Journalists should resist exploitation\nsince they encourage bad practice among the media owners.
