{"id":3002,"date":"2022-10-09T13:06:03","date_gmt":"2022-10-09T13:06:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/?p=3002"},"modified":"2022-10-09T13:06:03","modified_gmt":"2022-10-09T13:06:03","slug":"indigenous-medicinal-trees-facing-extinction-threat-in-kakamega-forest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=3002","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous medicinal trees facing extinction threat in Kakamega forest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><code>By Seliphar Musungu, Kakamega<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kakamega rainforest has been\nidentified to play a big role in restoring indigenous trees in its ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; The restoration plays an\nimportant role in the existence of&nbsp; the vast beneficial biodiversity,\nincluding the growth of traditional herbs that cure diseases such as malaria\nand respiratory infections&nbsp; among others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost all traditional medicine that\nis used by the community around Kakamega forest comes from the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/kakamega-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3006\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/kakamega-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/kakamega-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption><strong><code>Kakamega forest<\/code><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;Unfortunately,&nbsp; these trees are facing a\nthreat of extinction due to climate change and human activities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kakamega forest has over 1000 species of plants, 80 per cent of these plants&nbsp; being considered as highly medicinal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the medicinal trees include Mandia Whyteii which is locally known as Mukombero, Fagara known as Shikhuma and Olea Capensisi known as Elgon teak. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forty key species of medicinal\nplants used by local people have been identified and recorded. Fifty-five\npercent of these are shrubs, thirty-two percent trees, seven-and-a-half percent\nare lower plants such as herbs or forbs while five percent are climbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;About seventy percent of the\nmedicinal plants grow inside the forest while thirty percent around the edge\nand the immediate surroundings outside the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although these medicine trees are\nfound in Kakamega forest, some of the species that were in existence&nbsp;years\nago are already facing extinction. Finding them is not as easy as it was\nbefore.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG-20221008-WA0048.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3005\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG-20221008-WA0048.jpg 960w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG-20221008-WA0048-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG-20221008-WA0048-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG-20221008-WA0048-696x464.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption><strong><code>Kakamega forest<\/code><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the near future we might not be able to see some of these herb trees in the forest anymore because of adverse effects of climate change and human activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human activities in the forest such as cutting down of the trees for timber poses a threat to the existance of some of these indigenous medicinal species such as Fagara<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, because of increased demand, local residents now target the medicinal plants in the forest due to a shortage of the traditional medicine in their homes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Some of the trees were uprooted because of settlement, harvest and even mining. Residents harvest them from the forest to plant them at their homes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These trees are reduced every day in the forest due to high demand of traditional medicine by the community living around the forest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG-20221008-WA0046.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3003\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG-20221008-WA0046.jpg 720w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG-20221008-WA0046-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG-20221008-WA0046-696x464.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption><strong><code>Prof Busolo<\/code><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medicinal plants like the famous\nmugombero which were abundant in homes have become very rare nowadays because\nof the reasons above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An environmentalist and a climate change activist from the University of Nairobi Prof Cromwel Busolo has raised the need to come up with sustainable&nbsp;measures that will help&nbsp; in conserving&nbsp; biodiversity&nbsp; in the forest.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has recommended that the fallen trees, instead of being used as firewood, should be left to decay in the forest so that those gases that were stored in the tree get back to the soil.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will prevent the emission of\nmore carbon dioxide in the atmosphere when firewood is&nbsp; burnt hence\nreducing global warming that is a threat ti to&nbsp; the&nbsp; growth of\nmedicinal plants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the carbon gas released\nin the soil is useful to the growth of the other remaining medicinal plants\nspecies in the forest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to curb adverse effects brought by human activities, Prof Busolo has raised the need for local residents to plant their own medicine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> This will increase the supply&nbsp;of medicinal plants near them hence they will not go for those in the forest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a need for the government to act very fast to save the remaining medicinal plant species. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The County government of Kakamega should come up with a system of educating the community around the forest on how to correctly harvest these plants without killing them and come up with sustainable measures to protect the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ends<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Seliphar Musungu, Kakamega Kakamega rainforest has been identified to play a big role in restoring indigenous trees in its ecosystem. &nbsp; The restoration plays an important role in the existence of&nbsp; the vast beneficial biodiversity, including the growth of traditional herbs that cure diseases such as malaria and respiratory infections&nbsp; among others.
