{"id":2990,"date":"2022-10-06T13:03:53","date_gmt":"2022-10-06T13:03:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/?p=2990"},"modified":"2022-10-06T13:03:53","modified_gmt":"2022-10-06T13:03:53","slug":"education-stakeholders-commit-to-teaching-coding-in-schools-as-building-blocks-for-digital-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=2990","title":{"rendered":"Education stakeholders commit to teaching coding in schools as building blocks for digital economy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><code>By Dennis Avokoywa, Nairobi <\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Education\nstakeholders yesterday affirmed their commitment to the early introduction of\nthe coding curriculum in schools to help learners acquire technical skills\nrelevant to a digital economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technology\nis rapidly changing the landscape of the workforce with employers across the\nworld increasingly seeking a digitally skilled labour force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;It is projected that by 2030, 50 \u2013 55 per cent\nof all jobs in Kenya will require some level of digital skills with the demand\nbeing primarily driven by enterprises adopting digital technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMAGE-6-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2993\"\/><figcaption>S<strong><code>enior Manager, East Africa Cambridge Assessment International Education, Joseph Mbugua, (L), and CEO Kodris Africa, Mugumo Muneno at a panel discussion during the Kodris Africa and KAIS ICT Symposium held today.  <\/code><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\nis against this backdrop that the Kenya Association of International Schools\n(KAIS) in partnership with Education Technologies firm, Kodris Africa and Kenya\nCommercial Bank on Thursday convened a Digital skills symposium that brought\ntogether various stakeholders from the education and ICT sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;The event delved into the computing and coding\ncurriculum and the importance of incorporating digital skills in primary and\nsecondary schools. Also present were tech giants Microsoft, Google Safaricom\nand Liquid Telcom among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><code> In Kenya, the demand for digital skills training is expected to surge as  we approach the next decade. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the  speed of this change. 70 per cent of demand is expected to be for  foundational skills, followed by 23 per cent for non-ICT intermediate  skills.  <\/code><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In\nthe last two decades, curriculum reforms have been driven by rapid\ntechnological and social changes. We have no option but to make coding\npart of our lifestyle,\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking\nduring the event that was attended by close to 100 International Primary and\nSecondary Schools, Jack Ngare who is also head of Google in Africa said the\nonly way Kenya and Africa are going to stay at par with developed nations is by\nintroducing coding at the elementary level of schooling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCoding\nis one of the fundamental building blocks in IT and empowering our people to be\nable to understand and build some of the technological products that we consume\nis why we need to start teaching coding in this country at zero option. Rather\nthan just being consumers of technology, we build it as well. We were left\nbehind by the 1<sup>st<\/sup>, 2<sup>nd<\/sup> and 3<sup>rd<\/sup> industrial revolutions,\nare we going to allow ourselves to be left behind by the 4<sup>th<\/sup>\nindustrial revolution too?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><code> Coding involves translating instructions for a computer from human  language to a language a machine\/computer can understand. Technologies  that we have come to rely on such as smartphones, ATM cards, mobile  money, Internet banking, e-learning, and telemedicine all run on codes.  <\/code><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Managing\nDirector, Microsoft Africa Development Centre, Catherine Muraga said coding has\nbecome so central to all career paths adding, \u201cthe need to teach learners how\nto solve problems through coding has become a lot more important that we have to\npay attention. It is as important as English or French in communication. We\nhave to make sure our children are well equipped for efficiency and\nproductivity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Kenya, the demand for digital skills training is expected to surge as we approach the next decade. The curriculum we have developed is not necessarily\nfor one segment of schools, it is cross-cutting and can be deployed by public\nschools, private schools and international schools.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coding involves translating instructions for a\ncomputer from human language to a language a machine\/computer can understand.\nTechnologies that we have come to rely on such as smartphones, ATM cards,\nmobile money, Internet banking, e-learning, and telemedicine all run on codes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking on behalf of KICD, which is the body mandated\nto provide curricula and curriculum support materials, the Assistant Director of\ne-Learning, Charles Munene said that \u201cIn the last two decades, curriculum\nreforms have been driven by rapid technological and social changes.
