{"id":2969,"date":"2022-09-28T14:27:15","date_gmt":"2022-09-28T14:27:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/?p=2969"},"modified":"2022-09-28T14:27:15","modified_gmt":"2022-09-28T14:27:15","slug":"three-kenya-wildlife-service-officers-drowned-in-river-isukha-kakamega","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=2969","title":{"rendered":"Three Kenya wildlife service officers drowned in river Isukha \u2013Kakamega"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code><strong>Dennis Avokoywa, Kakamega <\/strong><\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Operations to retrieve\nthe bodies of three Kenya Wildlife service\u2019s officers who yesterday drowned in\nriver Isikhu in Kakamega County have been resumed today after yesterday&#8217;s\npostponement of the activity due to heavy rains witnessed in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three officers\nallegedly drowned in the said river while on an operation to arrest some\nresidents who had gone to harvest sand from the flooding river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to our\nsources, the officers were manning Kakamega forest in Shinyalu sub-county when\nthey got a tip of some residents illegally harvesting sand before they laid a\nstrategic trap to pounce on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;They dove inside\nthe water with intentions of secretly swimming and surrounding the\nsuspects&#8221; Said Meshark Juma, an eye witness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><code>\"Out of the four officers on patrol, 3 were overwhelmed and carried away by the flooding waters,\" Said another eyewitness.<\/code><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In what was termed as being\nbeaten at their own game, the area residents refused to assist the police in\nsearch of the drowned officers&#8217; bodies accuse them of harassing them every time\nthey got into the forest to collect firewood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Women found\ncollecting firewood in the forest are raped while men are beaten or demanded to\npay high fines before being released,&#8221; He claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sand harvesting is\nillegal in Kakamega County due to its risk factor of drowning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far one body has\nbeen retrieved remaining two; cheif peter mulengwa of muranda location\nconfirmed the incidence<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the issue of the shamba system, the residents have demanded the implementation of Deputy President Rigathe Gachagua&#8217;s proposal of returning farming activities in the forest as a way of increasing food production in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">End <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dennis Avokoywa, Kakamega Operations to retrieve the bodies of three Kenya Wildlife service\u2019s officers who yesterday drowned in river Isikhu in Kakamega County have been resumed today after yesterday&#8217;s postponement of the activity due to heavy rains witnessed in the area.
