A family from Kakamega County is\nasking for financial assistance for the surgery of their son’s\nstrange illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The family of Christine Shikuku from Kakamega county, Khwisero sub county, Emuhunzulu\u00a0village\u00a0is appealing to well-wishers to intervene\u00a0and help in raising funds for their\u00a0son’s\u00a0surgery at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"During his healing process he developed a vesico-cutaneous fistula (came as a result of the failure of closure of the recto-urethral fistula) which demands another surgery to correct this problem,\" said Amuyuku. <\/code><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Christine Shikuku, who\nis the mother of Hopekin Kwakha, said that her son developed the condition two\ndays after birth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter I gave birth to\nmy son I came to find out that my son neither urinated nor went for a\nlong call,” said Christine.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three days later,\nShikuku took his son Hopekin to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga referral hospital in\nKisumu where doctors examined and performed a surgery that failed and\nquickly referred him to a specialist at Kenyatta National\nHospital in Nairobi.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In Kenyatta, two\nscans were conducted, it emerged that following the surgery in Kisumu his\nurinary tract had been interfered with forcing urine to mix with other\nwaste materials in the large intestine,” Christine explained.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ready to save her son’s\nlife, doctors in Kenyatta made a hole in his stomach and connected a duct to\nhis large intestines to help ease passage of waste. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The boy had\nanorectal malformation which led to the above procedure done and colostomy was\ninstalled,\u201d said a Kakamega based specialist.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doctors were not\nable to connect two surgeries on Hopekin due to his age. his mother\nwas advised to let him grow under close supervision from the doctors until\nhe is one year old then the surgery can be conducted.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill from the\nhospital accumulated to 300,000 shillings for the time Hopekin stayed in the\nhospital. This made the hospital management not discharge him until his bill is\ncleared. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 “My husband\nand I have no jobs, we depend on casual labor to cater for our family, I was\nforced to stay in the hospital with my son while relying on my husband for food\nsince food given in the hospital was strictly for my son”, Christine said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything changed from\nbad to worse; as usual Christine was in the hospital looking after their sons\nHopekin since they can\u2019t be discharged due to failure to pay the hospital\nbill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was waiting for her husband\nto show up as usual since she was feeling hungry, so she tried to reach her on\nthe phone to no avail. Christine decides to walk around the hospital and find\nsomething to eat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As she was getting near\nthe hospital gate Christine saw someone who looked like his husband being\ncarried on a stretch from the ambulance, his clothes soaked in\nblood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

” I made a\nfollow-up only to be told the person admitted at ward seven was Patrick\nShikuku, my husband, he had been knocked by a car while on her way to bring me\nfood”, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things were\ntough for as her husband and the father of 8 children was admitted to\nward 7 in the same hospital where her son was, living behind 7 children\nwith no one to look after them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 “The bill of\nthe two increased to more than 500,000 shillings. Our efforts to sell\nhousehold things to cater for the bill bore no fruit, further deepening my\nfrustrations”, Shikuku said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Luckily the bill\nwas waived off by the hospital’s management after 6 months allowing us to\nreturn home”, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back home no one from\nthe community wanted to be associated with the family.  Since they had\nsold almost everything remained with nothing Hopekins was forced to walk\nwith rags around his belly to prevent waste from coming out\nuncontrollably. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Urine and\ndefecation came out of his body uncontrollably, its smell made him lose\nfriends”, Said Christine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not giving up on his\nson, Christine hustled to get 600 every day to buy adult diapers for his son\nsomething that his teacher said that is draining him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 “As teachers\nwe have tried our level best to help Hopekins family including coming up with a\nWhatsapp group to raise the required amount for him to go for surgery but\nhasn’t bore fruits”, Said Hopekins teacher, Grace Maluti<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We plea with the\ncounty government to set aside some budget to help in catering for the needs of\nsuch pupils”, added Hopekins head teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A great milestone was\nmade by Hopekin; he is now 12 years old, in class 4 at Emuhunzulu primary\nschool. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This challenge has made Hopekins family\nto call on well-wishers all over the country to help and raise close to 1million\nshillings for his surgery so that he can live a normal life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
