The county has a total of 844, 709 registered voters. The election will decide who will be taking over from Governor Wycliffe Oparanya who has been in power for 10 years.<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kakamega gubernatorial elections\nwas marred by voter apathy with low number of voters turning up to cast their\nvotes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike in the past where long queues\nare normally witnessed at polling stations, this time round, a handful of\nvoters could be seen at various polling centers across the county exercising their\ndemocratic right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, a total of 178 votes out\nof the 1,906 registered voters had casted their votes in Bukhungu polling\ncenter located in Lurambi constituency by 10:00am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other centers such as Kakamega\nprimary, Kakamega Muslim primary, ACK Church Milimani and Sichirayi polling\nstations also witnessed a hand full number of voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the seven candidates in the\nKakamega gubernatorial race Suleiman Sumba of Kanu speaking after casting his\nvote at Mumias Township primary school polling station, complained that some of\nthe Kiems kits in different polling stations had failed delaying the voting\nexercise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Mumias Township primary school\npolling station, delays in voting were experienced after the failure of one\nKiems kit at stream three. The problem was later resolved with voting kicking\noff few minutes after 8 am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI came here at 7.30am but the\nvoting exercise had not started as one of the KIEMS kit was not working and\neven at Mumias Muslim primary school. The situation was rectified and voting\nstarted at 8am,\u201d said Sumba<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sumba lamented that the exercise had\nwitnessed a low voter turnout and blamed it on the postponement of the\ngubernatorial elections by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission\n(IEBC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Mr Sumba said he will\naccept the outcome of the polls, saying the voters would have spoken and their voice\nshould be respected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 As at 10:00a.m Fernandes Barasa, the ODM gubernatorial\ncandidate had voted in Bulimbo polling station in Matungu constituency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Barasa called upon the\nelectoral agency to take a stern action against Cleophas Malala, the ANC\ncandidate and his closet rival in the race for breaking election laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barasa claimed that his opponent is\nbuying voters in many polling stations in the county.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have traversed Matungu\nConstituency, and in almost all the polling stations, there is a lot of voter\nbribery, which in my considered opinion is an election offense,\u201d Barasa said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barasa urged IEBC to take action\ntowards his opponent since he had already reported matters to the security\nagencies to be vigilant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I would like to urge IEBC and\nsecurity agencies to make sure they take action so that people can vote without\nintimidation.” Said Barasa<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explained that most polling\nstations in the county have reported incidents of voter bribery <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have evidence, in fact when\nyou move around you will see that voter bribery is rampant and we have already\nreported to the relevant authorities.” He said <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malala voted at 11.00am at the\nBukhungu polling station in Kakamega town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outgoing Governor Wycliffe Oparanya\nafter casting his vote at Mabole Primary School in Butere Sub County, he said\nthat they have identified the person who hacked his Facebook account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oparanya\nsaid action will be taken against the individual and will be dealt with as per\nthe Cybercrimes Act of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The governor\nalso blamed Malala of trying to influence the outcome of the election through\nvoter bribery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe people\narrested are from ANC party which is supporting Malala. They were engaging themselves\nin cases of voter bribery. We have also noted cases failure of KIEMS Kits. The\ncases are rampant and has delayed people from voting,\u201d said Oparanya<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also\nlamented that the voter turnout was very low and exuded confidence that the ODM\ncandidate Mr Barasa will carry the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Am Azimio supporter,\nif am supporting anybody I will be supporting Azimio candidate and hopefully he\nwill get the seat and if he doesn\u2019t, be it. The next governor must continue\nfrom where I left as I have projects that are yet to be completed,\u201d said\nOparanya <\/p>\n\n\n\n
