{"id":271,"date":"2020-01-26T11:53:51","date_gmt":"2020-01-26T11:53:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/?p=271"},"modified":"2020-01-26T11:53:51","modified_gmt":"2020-01-26T11:53:51","slug":"opinion-poll-mudavadi-wetangula-and-eugene-most-preferred-luhya-presidential-hopefuls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=271","title":{"rendered":"OPINION POLL: Mudavadi, Wetang\u2019ula and Eugene most preferred Luhya presidential hopefuls"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kakamega<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By The County Splash Team <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With less than three years remaining to the 2022 polls, political\nalignments and alliances have begun shaping up starting with the Building\nBridges Initiative (BBI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Politicians on the other hand are busy chest thumping are\nthrowing salvos at each, all aimed creating a perception in the minds of the electorate\nthat they are superior and that they should be given kingmaker treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The song is the same in Western Kenya with the Central Organisation\nof Trade Unions (Cotu) Secretary General Francis Atwoli declaring himself as a\nkingmaker in determining who will succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta when he\nretires in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;Atwoli further has\nkicked up a storm in the Mulembe nation that he will be one declaring the\ncandidates who will be vying for different seats right away from the\nconstituency level as well who will be the Luhya spokesman who will double up\nas the region\u2019s presidential hopeful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His sentiments hadn\u2019t been received well across the\npolitical divide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <em><strong>Opinion poll results <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The County Splash, an online news platform took upon itself\nto carried out a survey on who the Mulembe people want to be given the mantle\nto be the lead the region as the country approaches the 2022 polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opinion poll was carried out between January 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\n\u2013 January 13, this year in Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga, Busia and Trans Nzoia\ncounties, a region largely inhabited by the Luhyas and 3,687 people were\nreached through telephone interviews, online survey, one on one interviews as\nwell as through filling questionnaire\u2019s on their preferred candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of 1,449 people voted in favour of Amani National\nCongress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi to be given the mantle to lead the\nregion which represents 39.30 per cent of the total votes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"732\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/madvd.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/madvd.jpg 732w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/madvd-275x300.jpg 275w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/madvd-696x761.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 732px) 100vw, 732px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Musalia Mudavadi<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetang\u2019ula was second with 814\nvotes (22.08 per cent) and Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa a\ndistant third with 403 votes (10.93 per cent). Kakamega Governor Wycliffe\nOparanya garnered 311 votes at position four with 8.44 per cent of the total\nvotes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD),\nSecretary General, Dr Mukhisa Kituyi got 91 votes (2.47 per cent) and was\npolled at position five and was closely followed by Ex- Lugari legislator Cyrus\nJirongo at position with 62 votes (1.68 per cent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who preferred Cotu\u2019s Francis Atwoli to be anointed as\nthe Luhya kingpin and lead the region as the presidential flag bearer were 59\nrepresenting 1.60 per cent of the total votes. Atwoli was position seven in the\npolls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/file72c3jt419s152m7i64d.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/file72c3jt419s152m7i64d.jpg 800w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/file72c3jt419s152m7i64d-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/file72c3jt419s152m7i64d-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/file72c3jt419s152m7i64d-696x522.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>Moses Wetang&#8217;ula<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Busia Senator Amos Wako was position eight with 53 votes\n(1.44 per cent) and Former National Assembly Speaker Kenneth Marende polled at\nnumber nine with 32 votes (0.87 per cent) whereas 413 people who participated in\nthe survey were undecided which represents 11.20 per cent of the total votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <em><strong>Analysis <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the opinion poll, participants were asked as to why\nthey prefer a particular candidate as well as his weaknesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;Majority of those\ninterviewed said they prefer Mudavadi given that he stature is that of a\nstatesman and more so not controversial. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">\u201cMudavadi having risen to the positions of Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister respectively, places him above the rest. He is the only senior most Luhya leader who has tried his stab at Presidency in 2013 and became position three after President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga with 483,981 votes,\u2019.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"504\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/eugenne.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/eugenne.jpg 504w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/eugenne-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Eugene Wamalwa<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">&nbsp;<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;According to the\nsurvey, Mudavadi\u2019s calm nature makes him sellable to other regions like in Rift\nValley where his mother comes from. His closeness with the Former President\nDaniel Toroitich Arap Moi and that of Kenyatta family also gives him bragging\nrights. The two families can rally their communities to vote for him.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><em>\u201cMudavadi having risen to the positions of Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister respectively, places him above the rest. He is the only senior most Luhya leader who has tried his stab at Presidency in 2013 and became position three after President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga with 483,981 votes,&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <em><strong>Mudavadi\u2019s undoing factor <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also termed Mudavadi as a gentleman for having formed\nthe National Super Alliance (Nasa), brought the Luhya people together in 2017\nbut handed the mantle to Raila to lead the Nasa brigade in the presidential\npolls, in which the coalition became second to Jubilee coalition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/oparanya-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/oparanya-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/oparanya-1-300x165.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Wycliffe Oparanya<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mudavadi also has a party that has six elected legislators\nin Kakamega, five in Vihiga and one MP in Bungoma and Busia counties\nrespectively with many MCAs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, because his humble nature many don\u2019t consider him\nas a presidential material. They also said he is very unpredictable since after\nforming Nasa, he was welcomed Raila, Kalonzo Musyoka and Wetang\u2019ula to the\ncoalition and instead of being the flag bearer, he left it to Raila.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This move of reducing himself to a mere campaigner of Raila\nafter forming Nasa not only disappointed his supporters but also irked the\nMulembe nation for giving his \u2018birth right\u2019 to Raila.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"724\" height=\"430\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/kituyi.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/kituyi.jpeg 724w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/kituyi-300x178.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/kituyi-696x413.jpeg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Dr Mukhisa Kituyi<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;They also said\nMudavadi is stingy despite being endowed with resources, which has been\nenabling factor to Deputy President William Ruto to make inroads in Western region\nand win his elected MPs and MCAs to his side and more so gifting Jubilee\nseveral MPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong><em>Wetang\u2019ula factor <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Wetang\u2019ula, they said he is a go- getter and that he\nstops at nothing to get what he wants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDespite Governor Oparanya saying that he (Wetang\u2019ula)\ncannot launch his presidential ambitions at Muliro Gardens in Kakamega in 2016\nand even after being lobbied with tear gas canisters, the rally went on,\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"301\" height=\"372\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/jirongo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/jirongo.jpg 301w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/jirongo-243x300.jpg 243w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Cyrus Jirongo<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They termed Wetang\u2019ula as an orator who moves crowds easily\nwhen given a microphone and more so as someone who has been in government\nholding senior positions for more than 25 years. He has a party, two governors,\nsix MPs and majority of MCAs in Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But his greatest undoing is the fact that the Bungoma senator,\nshort tempered and makes unilateral decisions without consultative his\ncolleagues. They said he is also selfish, the reason they disagreed in dissolving\nFord Kenya and ANC to form one formidable party ahead of the 2022 polls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <em><strong>Wamalwa factor <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Eugene Wamalwa, they viewed him as someone who has risen\nto power using the name of his late brother, Michael Kijana Wamalwa, the eighth\nVice President of Kenya. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They said he is charismatic leader who can be accepted\nanywhere and is for this reason he has held plum government jobs like Minister\nfor Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Water and now Devolution. He is close\nto President Uhuru Kenyatta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/atwoli.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-281\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>Francis Atwoli <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s greatest undoing was when he (Wamalwa) together with Senate\nSpeaker Kenneth Lusaka \u2018sold\u2019 the New Ford Kenya party and joined the Jubilee party,\nleaving their supporters like orphans. He is also perceived to be flexing\nmuscles with Wetang\u2019ula in pursuit to control the Bukusu politics in Bungoma\nand Trans Nzoia counties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <em><strong>Oparanya factor <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Oparanya, he only has a following in Kakamega and partly\nBusia county. He is loved by the elites and considered a manager and not a\npolitician. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><\/p><cite><strong><em>&#8221; He\u2019s greatest undoing was when he (Wamalwa) together with Senate Speaker  Kenneth Lusaka \u2018sold\u2019 the New Ford Kenya party and joined the Jubilee  party, leaving their supporters like orphans. He is also perceived to be  flexing muscles with Wetang\u2019ula in pursuit to control the Bukusu  politics in Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties,&#8221; <\/em><\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being an architect of Vision 2030, Oparanya is ranked highly\namong the rest. His work as Kakamega Governor has also earned him accolades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, he has no support among the youths who perceive him\nas someone who doesn\u2019t have their interests at heart given the way he has been\ndistributing plum jobs in his administration. His association with Raila is\nalso another undoing factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <em><strong>Kituyi factor <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/wako.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-282\"\/><figcaption><em><strong>Amos Wako<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Mukhisa Kituyi, they view him as someone who has gained\nexperience while at UNCTAD and as a former legislator. They want him given the mantle\nto be a luhya kingpin for also being close to Uhuru whereas they view Jirongo\nas a humble leader who has political experience for serving both in the Moi and\nKibaki era but his undoing is that he is currently not endowed with resources\nlike in his hey days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/marende.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-283\" width=\"510\" height=\"510\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>Kenneth Marende<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Francis Atwoli, they said he has a lot of money and\nspeak the people\u2019s mind as well as his connections to statehouse.
