More than 10 cases of child trafficking have been reported since last year<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cases of child trafficking in\nKakamega County is on the rise, this is according to the Children\u2019s Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kakamega County Director of Children\nServices Geoffrey Musoko has said that at least 10 cases of child trafficking\nin the county was reported in the last one year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cMore than 10 cases of child trafficking have\nbeen reported to our office for the last one year. There has been low reporting\nof such cases since many find it difficult to report,\u201d said Musoko <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Musoko who spoke during the World\nDay Against Trafficking of Persons 2022 said that number of cases being reported\nis low because many prefer not reporting such cases for fear of intimidation,\nsaying others lack proper channels to make such reports. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet us respect children and leave them to grow up responsibly. Children should know the phone numbers and the names of their parents and guardians in order to inform authorities in case they get lost,\u201d <\/code><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Musoko said that children are the\nfoundation of any country and are expected to be leaders in the future and\nparticipate in development hence they should be nurtured. \u201cLet us not misuse\nour children on things that do not empower them,\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Musoko also released a booklet which\ncontains guidelines that should be used in protecting children from\ntrafficking. This applies to all stakeholders including care givers, parents,\nteachers and the public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He asked urged parents to keep their\nchildren at home and monitor their movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet us respect children and leave\nthem to grow up responsibly. Children should know the phone numbers and the\nnames of their parents and guardians in order to inform authorities in case\nthey get lost,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also advised teachers and school\nheads to be aware of strangers who come in the name of collecting children from\nschool on behalf of their parents. \u201cIt is also the responsibility of\nteachers to ensure the environment where children learn from is child friendly\nand protective,\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Programme Coordinator for the\nInternational Committee for the Development of People(CISP) Kenya, Esther Waduu\nsaid that cases of child trafficking have become so rampant which include\nsimple acts like taking children from one place to another and subjecting them\nto child labor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added that child marriage,\nprostitution are other forms of child trafficking witnessed in Kakamega.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She urged the community to join\nhands and report such cases to government agencies for rescue efforts or by\ndialing a free toll number 116 for immediate response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waduu said they continuously engage\ncommunity through community dialogues, involve theatre groups and engage in\nradio talk shows to encourage community members to be active in exposing child\ntrafficking and child abuse cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mumias Central and Mumias North Ward\nAdministrator Fredrick Shibuyanga said it is the responsibility of every Kenyan\nand parents to support the government in protecting children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the parents, Janice Anyanga,\nasked other parents to engage their children and warn them of the dangers they\nmight find themselves in during political rallies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
