{"id":2609,"date":"2022-07-26T06:51:23","date_gmt":"2022-07-26T06:51:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/?p=2609"},"modified":"2022-07-26T06:51:23","modified_gmt":"2022-07-26T06:51:23","slug":"donation-of-equipment-by-astrazeneca-to-enable-research-into-early-detection-of-non-communicable-diseases-in-kenya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=2609","title":{"rendered":"Donation of equipment by AstraZeneca to enable research into early detection of non-communicable diseases in Kenya"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><code><strong>The equipment leverages retinal scanning technology to predict the risk or presence of complications arising from hypertension and diabetes as an alternative to invasive screening methods currently in use<\/strong><\/code><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><code>By Augustine Mulaa, Nairobi, Kenya<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AstraZeneca\nand the Ministry of Health have today announced a donation of innovative screening\nequipment to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Kenyatta National\nHospital (KNH)\/ The University of Nairobi (UON) and the Aga Khan University\nHospital (AKUHN). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The equipment\nwill enable recipient institutions to conduct research on the use of\nnon-invasive technology to predict the risk of hypertension, diabetes, eye\nconditions and other medical conditions through retinal scanning.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for up to 70 percent of global deaths. It should\nimprove the screening capacity for NCDs in the country by identifying the risk\nor presence of complications arising particularly from hypertension and\ndiabetes through a single retinal scan instead of separate tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking at a\nstakeholder event that marked the handover, Ashling Mulvaney, Vice President,\nGlobal Sustainability and Access to Healthcare, at AstraZeneca said: \u201cAccess to\nhealthcare is a key sustainability pillar for AstraZeneca and we are\ncontinuously leveraging science to strengthen the resilience and sustainability\nof healthcare systems. Diabetes, on the other hand, is screened for by taking a blood sample\nwhich is invasive, more costly, and requires a longer turnaround time for\nresults. People who dislike needles may also avoid the procedure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is hoped\nthat through the equipment however, screening for hypertension and diabetes\nwill be carried out by scanning an individual\u2019s retina for both simultaneously.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/AHH-SERENA-PHOTOS-0101.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/AHH-SERENA-PHOTOS-0101.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/AHH-SERENA-PHOTOS-0101-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/AHH-SERENA-PHOTOS-0101-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/AHH-SERENA-PHOTOS-0101-696x464.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption><strong><code>Panel discussion at Nairobi Serena Hotel<\/code><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The image will\nthen be processed through an online database stored in a cloud and compared to\nmillions of other retinal scans by Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence\n(AI) in order to predict whether the individual has any of the conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is fast,\nnon-invasive, and has potential to be more cost-effective, especially for large\nscale population level screenings in the longer term. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Rashid\nAman, the Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Health said that\nthe research equipment will fast track access to affordable and sustainable\nhealthcare in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Ministry\nof Health is currently intent on cementing its global commitment and alignment\nwith the global, regional and national policies on leveraging on technology,\ninnovation and ICT, access to affordable, safe, effective, and quality\nmedicines and diagnostics and other technologies, in the prevention and control\nof NCDs. Successful health care delivery requires effective medical devices as\ntools for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation,\u201d said Dr Aman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image medical changes associated with enhanced\ndisease, and especially seen in diabetic and hypertensive patients, will expand\ninnovation in early detection of systemic complications manifesting as eye\ndisease thus effectively controlling an important health problem,\u201d he said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><code> HHA is currently implemented in eight countries including Kenya,  Ethiopia, Tanzania, Ghana, Uganda, C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, Senegal, Rwanda, and  soon Nigeria \u2013 where the programme will be launched in August 2022.<\/code><\/strong> <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement was made to coincide with an event attended\nby stakeholders who are providing solutions sustainable outcomes for communities<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most established partnerships, which launched in\nKenya in 2014, is AstraZeneca&#8217;s Healthy Heart Africa (HHA) programme which\nleverages local partnerships to tackle the high burden of hypertension. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
