{"id":2551,"date":"2022-05-24T12:53:14","date_gmt":"2022-05-24T12:53:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/?p=2551"},"modified":"2022-05-24T12:53:14","modified_gmt":"2022-05-24T12:53:14","slug":"private-sector-makes-calls-for-incentives-to-create-jobs-and-protect-livelihoods-after-covid-19-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=2551","title":{"rendered":"Private sector makes calls for incentives to create jobs and protect livelihoods after covid-19 pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><code>Nairobi<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><code>By Seliphar Musungu<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) has made recommendations to the government on three cross-cutting thematic agendas to fast-track business and economic recovery by mitigating the effects of the Covid-19 Pandemic, rising food prices, and the ongoing drought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to KEPSA, sustained business\nincentives including tax, and regulatory reforms for economic competitiveness,\nguaranteed security, and smooth transition of leadership after the elections,\nand curbing the high cost of food production should be of top priority in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking following a meeting with Dr. Fred\nMatiang\u00ed Cabinet Secretary (CS), Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Interior &amp;\nCoordination of National Government and Chairman National Development\nImplementation Communication Cabinet Committee (NDICCC), KEPSA CEO, Carole\nKariuki, said urgent interventions were required in shoring up food security\ncurrently affected by drought and the global supply-chain disruption from the\nongoing Ukraine-Russia war. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to explore alternative markets for\nkey products sourced from Ukraine and Russia such as edible oils, wheat, steel,\nand fertilizer. Kenya imports 60 percent of its wheat shortfall from Russia and\nthe disruption of supplies has caused millers to resort to expensive imports\nfrom other source markets. Similarly, we must move away from relying on\nrain-fed agriculture and adopt measures to increase irrigation as part of the\nmeasures to address the impact of climate change and drought while mitigating\npost-harvest losses\u201d, said Kariuki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/KariukiMatiangi-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2552\"\/><figcaption><strong><code>Dr. Fred Matiangi, PhD,  Cabinet Secretary, The Ministry of Interior &amp; Coordination of National Government &amp; Chairman National Development Implementation Communication Cabinet Committee, prepares to make his remarks during the roundtable meeting held today with the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA). On the right is KEPSA CEO Carole Kariuki.<\/code><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking cognizance of the debilitating impacts\nof the Covid-19 pandemic on business and the economy, Kariuki said other\npriority intervention areas included implementing the additional 15 percent\nprice reduction on electricity, finalization of the National Tax Policy,\ninjecting capital into business by honoring pending bills and VAT refunds, and\nsustained digitization of government services for increased efficiency and\ntransparency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CS Matiangi expressed his appreciation for\nthe ongoing collaboration with the private sector adding that the executive arm\nof the government was committed to bringing everyone on board for enhanced\ncollaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fast and solid response in addressing\nthe Covid-19 pandemic in 2020\/2021 was courtesy of the private sector\u2019s mobilization\nefforts and collaboration with government and we will continue working together\nto explore our common aspirations\u201d, said Matiangi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The roundtable attended by over one hundred\nprivate sector representatives was called to review the progress and\nimplementation of cross-cutting issues and sectoral reform priorities as well\nas preparedness for peaceful elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To mitigate the food security effects of\nsupply disruption caused by the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war, KEPSA has\nrecommended the government lift the ban on wheat imports from India as millers explore\nalternate sources for wheat, maize,&nbsp;edible oil, and animal feed raw\nmaterials as well as temporary exemptions on import duty for maize and wheat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/KariukiMatiangi-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2553\"\/><figcaption><strong><code>Carole Kariuki, CEO KEPSA in a discussion with Dr. Fred Matiangi, PhD, EGH Cabinet Secretary, The Ministry of Interior &amp; Coordination of National Government during the roundtable meeting with the National Development Implementation Communication Cabinet Committee (NDICCC). Dr. Matiangi assured the private sector of the country's security ahead of the general elections slated for August 9th, 2022.<\/code><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are also asking the government to grant\nfull exemption to bonafide food and feed millers on import duty charged on\nmaize for six (6) months and twelve (12) months for wheat to cushion consumers\nand local farmers\u201d, said Kariuki. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On election preparedness, the private sector\ncalled for peace and stability noting that these were key ingredients to a conducive\nbusiness environment that businesses yearn for to thrive, grow jobs, and\nsupport economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs Kenya looks forward to the 2022 General\nelections and the evolving governance space, there is a need to collectively\nlook and envision a prosperous Kenya with good and accountable leadership,\nfocus on and communicate positive gains and growth opportunities for the\ncountry, and change the political, economic and social-economic narrative to\none that is positive and will build the country and its people towards the\naspired Vision 2030\u201d, said Dr. Vimal Shah, Chairman of the Mkenya Daima\nInitiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Shah urged the electorate to make\ninformed and patriotic choices ahead of the elections noting that knowledge of\ntheir civic role and mandate in the transition of government was key in putting\nbetter leaders in office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking in response to matters raised, CS Matiangi\nre-assured the private\nsector of the safety and security of the country saying, there was nothing to conclude that there would be disruption before, during, and after the elections in\nAugust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to assure you\nthat the country is safe and secure. The country is stable and the places that\nwere hotspots in 2017 are no longer hotspots and I am certain we are going to\nhave one of the most peaceful elections in the country this year\u201d, he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According\nto the government, in addition to peace monitors, embedded with the Nyumba Kumi initiative to enhance neighbourhood security, the government had also procured 2,720 new vehicles to enhance mobility and rapid response by the Police and other administrative officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, 20,300 Police Officers have been\nrecruited since 2017 with the training of security officers in public order\nmanagement currently ongoing for officers who will be seconded to cover the\nelection. A multi-agency team comprising the ODPP, DCI, NPS, CA, EACC and NCIC has\nalso been set up to fast-track handling of hate speech cases with 145 hate\nspeech cases already investigated and 65 files forwarded for prosecution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the outcomes of the meeting, the government\nsaid it was keenly observing the macroeconomic stability by looking at\nunemployment, Balance of Payment (BOP), interest and exchange rates to ensure\nthat the private sector continues to have a conducive operating environment\nincluding the implementation of the national tax policy to ensure there is\ncertainty in tax and the medium-term revenue projections.
