Enter 2022. Uhuru Kenyatta has been Head of State since 2013 when he took over from Kibaki. He has matured into a big beast and, unlike Kibaki, has an elaborate and drawn out plot for his succession. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenyatta and Odinga came in singing the tune of changing the constitution to expand the Executive and to give high profile jobs to poll losers. This would neuter the Deputy President\u2019s office. <\/code><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

One, where Moi\nabruptly named a political greenhorn his heir, Kenyatta in 2018 settled on an\nold pair of hands, a veteran of the opposition trenches and a former minister\nand premier, 77-year-old Raila Odinga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President has\nsince cumulatively whitewashed Odinga, the enemy he used to call old, mad and\nan idolator, into a wisdom-dispensing, bosom pal and president-in-waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two, Moi was\npreoccupied solely with Kenyatta occupying the top job. Kenyatta by driving\nOdinga to take his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) into government, albeit\nwithout an official merger, killed the parliamentary opposition. In came an\nelective dictatorship and out went keeping the government accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenyatta unleashed Odinga and a supporting cast on a long, public-funded and countrywide campaign for change of the constitution. This became known as the Building Bridges Initiative, aka BBI. <\/code><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

That way the\nPresident set the stage for the creation of a mega political tent – Azimio La\nUmoja, with he and Odinga, four times a failed presidential candidate, at the\nhelm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three, in\nchoosing Kenyatta, Moi rationalised that neither his long-serving V-P George\nSaitoti nor his many able party functionaries and government loyalists,\nqualified to lead Kenya. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenyatta set\nOdinga and ODM and his own Jubilee Party to wage a long campaign of attrition\nagainst Deputy President Ruto. Unlike Moi, Kenyatta cannot sack the Deputy\nPresident, but sustained attrition hurts his reputation, depletes his\nresources, cuts his influence and costs him political capital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four, Moi\nbelieving in his own powers of appeal, and clearly overestimating them,\npersonalised and fronted the Project-Uhuru-for-President campaign. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenyatta\nunleashed Odinga and a supporting cast on a long, public-funded and countrywide\ncampaign for change of the constitution. This became known as the Building\nBridges Initiative, aka BBI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moi did not want\nto change the constitution. After all he had so mutilated the document to\nincrease and buttress the powers of the presidency, he loved his creation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenyatta and\nOdinga came in singing the tune of changing the constitution to expand the\nExecutive and to give high profile jobs to poll losers. This would neuter the\nDeputy President\u2019s office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five, Moi late in\n2002 made Mr Musalia Mudavadi Vice-President and Mr Cyrus Jirongo a Cabinet\nMinister to bolster Kenyatta\u2019s stature and bid in Western Province, which was a\nstomping ground for opposition politicians. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenyatta and\nJubilee, Odinga and ODM, launched public supposedly anti-graft crusades that\nviciously took down Ruto. They soon became a rolling populist bandwagon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruto has been\ndemonised as the thief-in-chief of public resources or, as Odinga put it, the\nchief priest in the temple of corruption. Kenyatta and Odinga and their legion\nallies appear happy to fry Ruto politically than try him legally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six, Odinga, in\nparticular, and Kenyatta later on, have vilified churches and clergy as\nrecipients of largesse from Ruto; launders of ill-gotten wealth; partakers in\nmammon and, therefore, wolves in sheep’s clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seven, while\nopposition politicians have repeatedly complained of poll rigging, never before\nhad establishment figures publicly declared there exists a deep state that\ninfluences presidential polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nyandarua\nGovernor Francis Kimemia, who was the powerful Head of Public Service and\nPermanent Secretary for Internal Security in the Kibaki regime, offered insight\ninto the faceless state within a state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a TV\ninterview, he said a presidential candidate favoured by the deep state wins. If\nthe deep state is against you, he said, “your goose is cooked”. And,\nhe added, the deep state backs “credible” candidates. Kimemia appears\nto know deep state has a dog in the 2022 succession fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last, thanks to\nKenyatta\u2019s long-winded succession scheme, Odinga for the first time in his long\npolitical career is ridiculed as his project and puppet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruto, driven into opposition, swapping places with Odinga and branded mwizi<\/em> (thief), is easily Kenya’s most publicly humiliated second in command. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
