There was\npomp and colour at Bukhungu stadium during the launch of Fernandes Barasa\ngubernatorial bid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His wife,\nProf Janet Kasili and a host of local MCAs were present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Former\nKenya Electricity Transmission Company managing director is vying on\nRaila Odinga\u2019s ODM party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have 25 years\u2019 experience working in government\ninstitutions but a time has come for me to work for the people of Kakamega\nCounty and finish the work that was started by Governor Wycliffe Oparanya,\u201d\nsaid Barasa in his maiden speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barasa told the mammoth crowd at the stadium that he has\nwhat it takes to be the next county chief after Oparanya as compared to his\ncompetitors in the race who do not have leadership qualities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe governorship seat does not need a politician but a\nmanager like me who understands how to make policies that will go a long way in\nbringing development and jobs to the electorate,\u201d said Barasa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: \u201cKakamega must get a leader of my calibre who\nunderstands how a government works. I want to commit myself to commit to finish\nall the flagship projects that were started by Governor Oparanya who has\nalready laid the county\u2019s development blueprint,\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fernandes Barasa<\/code><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Barasa\nused the opportunity to outline his five-point development agenda saying in\ncase he is elected the next governor, he will bring back the ward development\nfund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said\nfor the county to realise meaningful development, ward reps must have a\ndevelopment kitty to use in developing their wards and streamline economic\ngrowth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barasa\nsaid he will also give the education sector a first priority, saying the county\nhas many needy students and in order to cushion them, he will set aside a\nspecial bursary fund that will take care of their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe\nbursary kitty will ensure all students from needy families\u2019 access quality education\nfrom secondary to university education. This is the only way we shall use to\nreduce the high poverty rates,\u201d said Barasa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former\nKetraco boss added that he will revise the scheme of service of ECDE teachers\nby increasing their salaries and at the same time, have them employed\npermanently by his government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\nsaid his government will also pump resources to the Small and Micro Enterprises\n(SMEs) by giving them interest free loans, saying it will go along in creating\nmore job opportunities for the youths as well as improving their standards of\nliving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the\nflip side, Barasa will have to square it out with Kakamega Deputy Governor\nPhilip Kutima and Shinyalu MP Kizito Mugalia at the ODM party nominations to\npick there flagbearer in the county.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others in the race are Lugari MP Ayub Savula who will be seeking the\ngovernorship seat on Democratic Alliance Party of Kenya, Boni Khalwale (UDA),\nCleophas Malala (ANC) and Amukoa Anangwe (ANC) among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kakamega County Assembly Leader Kennedy Kiliwake announced that the ward\nreps were supporting his bid, saying they want to have an ODM governor in the\ncounty and that it\u2019s only Barasa who can deliver the seat for the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senatorial aspirants Benjamin Andama, Dr Brian Lishenga and Dr Simbauni\nNdombi were present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
