{"id":2049,"date":"2021-06-26T20:28:12","date_gmt":"2021-06-26T20:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/?p=2049"},"modified":"2021-06-26T20:28:12","modified_gmt":"2021-06-26T20:28:12","slug":"nurses-in-support-of-a-national-strike-over-salaries-impasse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=2049","title":{"rendered":"Nurses in support of a national strike over salaries impasse"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Collins Matubwi<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kenya National Union of Nurses (Knun) has joined other trade unions in\nprotesting the move by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to freeze\npay hike for public servants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knun now says they are supporting calls by the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) to bring services in the public sector to a halt if SRC fail to rescind the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe National Executive Council (NCE) met on June 19 virtually and agreed\nthat Knun joins other trade unions in push for industrial strike in the public\nservice to protest the move by SRC for sidestepping its mandate,\u201d said Seth\nPanyako, the union Secretary General.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said Knun was in talks with all unions in the health sector to also join\nthe bandwagon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> <strong><code>\u201cSRC cannot stop the implementation of Article 41 (5) of the 2010 constitution, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) convention (98) and the Labour Relations Act that gives workers a right to a better pay,\" said Panyako<\/code><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wondered why SRC did not oppose a proposal in the Building Bridges\nInitiative (BBI) to increase the number of MPs and Senators and expand the\nexecutive as well as endorsing the Sh2million car grant to ward reps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Panyako, SRC commissioners, MPs and state officers are the ones\nwho take home hefty salaries at the expense of other public servants earning\nmeagre salaries &#8220;it will be a spat in their face to freeze salary\nincrement while hiding under bloated wage bill claims.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSRC cannot stop the implementation of Article 41 (5) of the 2010\nconstitution, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) convention (98) and\nthe Labour Relations Act that gives workers a right to a better pay.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added: \u201cAll proposals must be through a Collective Bargaining Agreement\n(CBA) and SRC has a role in that. If the economy can sustain what is contained\nin the BBI, why not let public servants be given a salary increment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Opetu criticized the government for using SRC to subject public servants\nto more suffering following the directive, arguing that even medics who were\ninfected with Covid-19 were forced to buy their own oxygen instead of the\ngovernment covering for the bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bishop Titus Mukhwana Khamala (MP LURAMBI)\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6NPD7vQpJ-Y?start=3&#038;feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On June 17, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission announced that it would\nnot be reviewing basic salary structures, allowances, and benefits for civil\nservants in the financial year 2021\/2022 and 2022\/2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SRC said the decision was arrived at following recommendations by the\nNational Treasury, citing tough economic times and constraints to the budget\noccasioned by the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe National Treasury advised the Commission to consider postponing the review for the next two fiscal years until the economy improves, due to the effects of Covid-19 pandemic on the performance of the revenue and the expected slow economic recovery,\u201d SRC said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SRC through its Chairperson Lynn Mengich said that no additional funding\nwould be provided for the implementation of job evaluation results in the next\ntwo fiscal years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beside Cotu (K) and Knun, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists\nUnion, Kenya Union of Clinical Officers, Kenya Union of Special Needs Education\nTeachers and the Union of National Research Institutes Staff of Kenya are also\ncalling for a national strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other unions are the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational\nInstitution, Hospitals and Allied Workers and the Kenya University Staff Union\n(Kusu, Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and the Kenya Union of\nPost-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ends<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Collins Matubwi The Kenya National Union of Nurses (Knun) has joined other trade unions in protesting the move by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to freeze pay hike for public servants.
