A Non Governmental organization, The\u00a0Shallom\u00a0Centre\u00a0for\u00a0Counselling\u00a0and\u00a0Development\u00a0(SCCoDev)\u00a0conducted a peace meeting meant to sensitize the public to preach peace ahead of the 2027 general elections.<\/p>\n

The study\u00a0dubbed “A\u00a0Tale\u00a0of\u00a0Electoral\u00a0Violence\u00a0in\u00a0Kenya:\u00a0National\u00a0Trends,\u00a0Drivers\u00a0and\u00a0Lessons\u00a0from\u00a0Bungoma\u00a0County”\u00a0 The\u00a0study’s\u00a0findings\u00a0were\u00a0presented\u00a0to\u00a0state\u00a0and\u00a0non-state\u00a0officials\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0National\u00a0Government,\u00a0County\u00a0Government,\u00a0Faith-Based\u00a0Organizations,\u00a0Civil\u00a0Society\u00a0Organizations,\u00a0and\u00a0community\u00a0representatives.<\/p>\n

Addressing the press following a two day workshop at the St. Chispine Anglican Church hall on\u00a017th\u00a0and\u00a018th\u00a0September\u00a02026,\u00a0The\u00a0Shallom\u00a0Centre\u00a0for\u00a0Counselling\u00a0and\u00a0Development Team lead Tecla Namachanja stated that peace is crucial ahead of the general elections.<\/p>\n

A total of forty five key\u00a0stakeholders\u00a0attended\u00a0the\u00a0dissemination\u00a0meeting\u00a0and\u00a0participated\u00a0actively.<\/p>\n

“Appreciating\u00a0the\u00a0fact\u00a0that\u00a0Bungoma\u00a0County\u00a0is\u00a0largely\u00a0peaceful,\u00a0this\u00a0Peace\u00a0is\u00a0mainly\u00a0the\u00a0absence\u00a0of\u00a0open\u00a0violence\u00a0rather\u00a0than\u00a0the\u00a0full\u00a0resolution\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0grievances\u00a0that\u00a0divide\u00a0communities,” she said.<\/p>\n

Ms Namachanja added that “We\u00a0are\u00a0afraid\u00a0that\u00a0beneath\u00a0this\u00a0calm\u00a0lie\u00a0grievances,\u00a0fears\u00a0and\u00a0vulnerabilities\u00a0that\u00a0could\u00a0be\u00a0activated\u00a0by\u00a0electoral\u00a0competition,”.<\/p>\n

She affirmed that Informed\u00a0that\u00a0early\u00a0warning\u00a0signs\u00a0are\u00a0not\u00a0just\u00a0mere\u00a0statistics\u00a0but\u00a0behind\u00a0every\u00a0percentage\u00a0lies\u00a0individuals\u00a0families,\u00a0memories\u00a0and\u00a0communities.\u00a0We\u00a0appeal\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0Political\u00a0class,\u00a0young\u00a0people,\u00a0mothers,\u00a0elders,\u00a0religious\u00a0leaders,\u00a0community\u00a0leaders,\u00a0and\u00a0all\u00a0citizen\u00a0of\u00a0Bungoma\u00a0County\u00a0to\u00a0protect\u00a0the\u00a0Peace\u00a0that\u00a0exists\u00a0today.<\/p>\n

“The\u00a0big\u00a0question\u00a0that\u00a0remains\u00a0in\u00a0our\u00a0minds\u00a0is\u00a0whether\u00a0to\u00a0wait\u00a0for\u00a0violence\u00a0to\u00a0erupt\u00a0before\u00a0we\u00a0act,\u00a0or\u00a0will\u00a0we\u00a0protect\u00a0the\u00a0peace\u00a0we\u00a0have\u00a0while\u00a0there\u00a0is\u00a0still\u00a0time?” She posed.<\/p>\n

Statistics show that 63.7 percent identified\u00a0fierce\u00a0political\u00a0competition\u00a0as\u00a0a major\u00a0conflict\u00a0catalyst while\u00a061.9 percent identified\u00a0historical\u00a0land\u00a0disputes.<\/p>\n

37.2%\u00a0identified\u00a0clan\u00a0rivalries.<\/p>\n

She added that despite being Passionate\u00a0about\u00a0the\u00a0gains\u00a0of\u00a0Devolution,\u00a0among\u00a0them\u00a0closer\u00a0access\u00a0to\u00a0public\u00a0administration,\u00a0development,\u00a0employment\u00a0opportunities,\u00a0procurement\u00a0opportunities\u00a0etc.\u00a0We\u00a0echo\u00a0that\u00a0County\u00a0resources\u00a0belong\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0people\u00a0and\u00a0that\u00a0they\u00a0must\u00a0never\u00a0become\u00a0a\u00a0reason\u00a0for\u00a0communities\u00a0to\u00a0turn\u00a0against\u00a0one\u00a0another.<\/p>\n

“Transparent,\u00a0inclusive\u00a0and\u00a0accountable\u00a0governance\u00a0is\u00a0therefore\u00a0an\u00a0important\u00a0part\u00a0of\u00a0violence\u00a0prevention.<\/p>\n

Political\u00a0differences\u00a0are\u00a0temporary,\u00a0elections\u00a0come\u00a0and\u00a0go,\u00a0and\u00a0leaders\u00a0change.\u00a0But\u00a0our\u00a0communities\u00a0remain,\u00a0and\u00a0we\u00a0must\u00a0continue\u00a0living\u00a0together\u00a0as\u00a0neighbours.\u00a0No\u00a0political\u00a0position\u00a0is\u00a0worth\u00a0a\u00a0life.\u00a0No\u00a0election\u00a0is\u00a0worth\u00a0destroying\u00a0a\u00a0family,\u00a0a\u00a0livelihood\u00a0or\u00a0a\u00a0community,” she said.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0young\u00a0person’s\u00a0poverty\u00a0should\u00a0never\u00a0become\u00a0another\u00a0person’s\u00a0opportunity\u00a0to\u00a0recruit\u00a0them\u00a0into\u00a0violence.<\/p>\n

We\u00a0call\u00a0for\u00a0greater\u00a0investment\u00a0in\u00a0livelihoods,\u00a0vocational\u00a0opportunities,\u00a0enterprise\u00a0development,\u00a0civic\u00a0participation\u00a0and\u00a0youth\u00a0leadership.<\/p>\n

“Let\u00a0us\u00a0choose\u00a0the\u00a0future\u00a0we\u00a0want\u00a0to\u00a0hand\u00a0to\u00a0our\u00a0children,<\/p>\n

We\u00a0therefore\u00a0call\u00a0on\u00a0all\u00a0stakeholders\u00a0to\u00a0act\u00a0before\u00a0tensions\u00a0escalate\u2014through\u00a0dialogue,\u00a0early\u00a0warning,\u00a0Active\u00a0Nonviolence,\u00a0responsible\u00a0political\u00a0engagement,\u00a0youth\u00a0empowerment\u00a0and\u00a0healing\u00a0of\u00a0unresolved\u00a0grievances,” she said.<\/p>\n

Let\u00a0us\u00a0act\u00a0while\u00a0there\u00a0is\u00a0still\u00a0peace\u00a0to\u00a0protect.<\/p>\n

Bungoma\u00a0County\u00a0must\u00a0not\u00a0become\u00a0a\u00a0statistic\u00a0of\u00a0electoral\u00a0violence.\u00a0It\u00a0must\u00a0remain\u00a0a\u00a0home\u00a0where\u00a0political\u00a0differences\u00a0can\u00a0be\u00a0expressed\u00a0without\u00a0fear,\u00a0and\u00a0where\u00a0every\u00a0citizen\u00a0can\u00a0look\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0future\u00a0with\u00a0hope.<\/p>\n

We\u00a0commit\u00a0ourselves\u00a0to:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0Strengthening\u00a0early\u00a0warning\u00a0and\u00a0early\u00a0response.
Communities\u00a0must\u00a0have\u00a0safe\u00a0channels\u00a0through\u00a0which\u00a0emerging\u00a0tensions\u00a0can\u00a0be\u00a0reported,\u00a0verified\u00a0and\u00a0addressed\u00a0before\u00a0they\u00a0become\u00a0violence.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Promoting\u00a0Active\u00a0Nonviolence.
Communities\u00a0should\u00a0be\u00a0equipped\u00a0with\u00a0practical\u00a0skills\u00a0for\u00a0dialogue,\u00a0de-escalation,\u00a0mediation\u00a0and\u00a0peaceful\u00a0action.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0Protecting\u00a0the\u00a0integrity\u00a0of\u00a0elections.
Vote\u00a0buying,\u00a0intimidation\u00a0and\u00a0other\u00a0practices\u00a0that\u00a0undermine\u00a0peaceful\u00a0participation\u00a0must\u00a0be\u00a0confronted\u00a0through\u00a0appropriate\u00a0lawful\u00a0mechanisms.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Building\u00a0youth\u00a0resilience\u00a0and\u00a0opportunity.
Young\u00a0people\u00a0must\u00a0be\u00a0supported\u00a0as\u00a0peacebuilders,\u00a0civic\u00a0leaders\u00a0and\u00a0agents\u00a0of\u00a0positive\u00a0change\u2014not\u00a0recruited\u00a0into\u00a0violence.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0Countering\u00a0digital\u00a0hate\u00a0and\u00a0misinformation.
Peacebuilding\u00a0must\u00a0enter\u00a0the\u00a0digital\u00a0spaces\u00a0where\u00a0citizens\u00a0increasingly\u00a0receive\u00a0information,\u00a0debate\u00a0politics\u00a0and\u00a0form\u00a0perceptions\u00a0of\u00a0one\u00a0another.<\/p>\n

6.\u00a0Addressing\u00a0historical\u00a0grievances.
Land,\u00a0clan,\u00a0resource\u00a0and\u00a0historical\u00a0grievances\u00a0cannot\u00a0simply\u00a0be\u00a0postponed\u00a0until\u00a0after\u00a0elections.\u00a0They\u00a0require\u00a0sustained\u00a0dialogue\u00a0and\u00a0reconciliation.<\/p>\n

7.\u00a0Investing\u00a0in\u00a0healing.
Where\u00a0communities\u00a0carry\u00a0memories\u00a0and\u00a0wounds\u00a0from\u00a0previous\u00a0violence,\u00a0trauma\u00a0healing\u00a0and\u00a0psychosocial\u00a0support\u00a0must\u00a0form\u00a0part\u00a0of\u00a0peacebuilding.<\/p>\n
