In \nthe ceremony which \nwas held at \nthe Supreme Court \nof Kenya and \nattended by Supreme \nCourt Judges, Law \nSociety Of Kenya President \nNelson Havi, and \nseveral other dignitaries. \nMaraga was de-robed \nto signify his \nofficial retirement and \nhis wig and \nrobe taken away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maraga also \nhanded over his \nofficial car and \ncomponents which included \nthe removal of CJ 1 number \nplate and national \nflag that flatters \nhis car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CJ \nwas escorted to \nhis private car \nin the company \nof his family \nto signify the \nbeginning of his \ncivilian life. He \nwas accorded his final salute as\nhe exited the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DCJ Mwilu described the \noutgoing CJ as a visionary \nleader who in his time \nimmensely transformed \nKenya\u2019s judicial system. \nShe noted that words alone were not enough to justify his significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018\u2019I will not attempt to list al\naccomplishments of CJ David Maraga as these are well known. Yours my lord has\nbeen a life service. I have gained immensely from being your DCJ. You leave a\nproud, irreversibly legacy,\u2019\u2019 Mwilu said \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n As he enjoys retirement, the outgoing\nCJ will be remembered for over-turning the election of President Uhuru Kenyatta\nin 2017 and subsequently advising him to dissolve parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Below is Maraga\u2019s last speech as\nthe Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I stand here\ntoday full of gratitude and appreciation as I say goodbye to the Judiciary\nafter about 18 years of service to the people of Kenya. During this time, I\nhave served first as a Judge of the High Court, Judge of the Court of Appeal\nand finally as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya. The time to say\ngoodbye has come. <\/p>\n\n\n\n I want to\nstart by thanking God for the opportunity He gave me to serve and the guidance\nHe provided as I carried out my duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In my interview for the position of Chief Justice, given the fact that the Supreme Court must hear and determine Presidential Election petitions within 14 days, I was asked whether I would sit on a Saturday, my Sabbath day. I understood the question to require of me to make a choice between getting the job of Chief Justice and living out my faith. I determined to live out my faith and said I would not sit on Saturday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Thereafter, in accordance with His\nsteadfast promises, God took over. The rest is history. He gave me the job and\nfought all my battles throughout my term as the Chief Justice. I don\u2019t know how\nto express my gratitude to Him for considering me worthy of His grace and\nfavours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A special Thank You goes to my dear\nwife and our children, as well as my extended family. Through your prayers and\nsupport, you have been to me what Harun was to Moses. I don\u2019t take that for\ngranted. I sincerely thank you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I also want to thank you, the people of Kenya, for your unwavering confidence in and support for me. Your solidarity in moments of great adversity and peril, and your steadfast defence in moments of trials and tribulations, only strengthened my resolve and enabled me to serve you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thank you too my dear colleagues, starting\nwith the Deputy Chief Justice, my brother and sister Judges with whom I had the\ndistinct pleasure of serving in the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal and the\nHigh Court. My deep sense of gratitude also goes to all the other Judges,\nMagistrates, Kadhis, Judicial Officers and Staff of the Judiciary whose\nvaluable support enabled me to satisfactorily discharge my duties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The milestones we have achieved in\nmoving the Judiciary transformation to where it is today is our collective\nachievement, and from which I draw enormous pride. I would also like to thank\nthe Judicial Service Commission, the Commissioners, the Chief Registrar and all\nthe Commission Staff. I know I pushed you very hard and made you sit for very\nlong hours many times. Thank you for bearing with me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n A special Thank You also goes to the\nlegal fraternity, through the Law Society of Kenya and the Justice Sector, in\nparticular the National Council on the Administration of Justice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Your dedication to the rule of law\nand your unflinching demand for efficiency and equity in the administration of\njustice have been a source of motivation and inspiration to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let me also thank the Executive and\nthe Legislature for the work we have been able to accomplish as co-equal arms\nof Government in the service of the Kenyan public.
