Elgeyo – Marakwet County has disbursed Ksh 73 million in bursaries to support more than 7,284 needy students across various learning institutions, reaffirming its commitment to improving access to education.<\/p>\n

The beneficiaries include students in junior and senior secondary schools, technical and vocational institutions, the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), colleges and universities.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the bursary disbursement exercise, Governor Wesley Rotich said the programme aims to ensure that students continue with their studies without interruption due to financial constraints.<\/p>\n

The governor noted that education remains one of the county government’s key priorities, describing investment in learners as an investment in the county’s future human capital and economic growth.<\/p>\n

He further directed schools not to send away students who have been awarded bursaries, assuring parents that the county government remains committed to supporting vulnerable learners despite delays caused by lengthy approval processes.<\/p>\n

Rotich also called for policy reforms that would enable county governments to administer bursaries more efficiently, arguing that the current procedures often delay the release of funds to deserving students.<\/p>\n

The bursary programme has received praise from education stakeholders and parents across the county.<\/p>\n

Kipsoen National Polytechnic Principal Joseph Bitok lauded the county government for supporting students and easing the financial burden faced by many families.<\/p>\n

He said the bursary allocations would enable many learners to remain in school and complete their studies, noting that technical institutions such as Kipsoen National Polytechnic have also benefited from the programme.<\/p>\n

Joseph encouraged young people to enrol in technical and vocational training institutions, highlighting the availability of bursaries and student loan opportunities that can help learners pursue their career ambitions.<\/p>\n

Parents also welcomed the initiative, describing it as a lifeline for families struggling to educate their children.<\/p>\n

Leonard chelimo a parent from the county, said bursaries remain among the most impactful programmes for local communities because they directly support learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.<\/p>\n

He urged county leaders to consider increasing future bursary allocations to ensure more students benefit from the programme and no ward is left behind.<\/p>\n

Leonard also expressed concern over the increasing cases of school unrest and arson reported in some institutions across the country. He called on parents, schools and government agencies to work together in addressing indiscipline among learners and strengthening mentorship programmes.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that parents have a critical role in guiding and supporting their children, noting that discipline begins at home.<\/p>\n

The Ksh 73 million bursary fund is expected to significantly ease financial pressure on thousands of households while enabling learners to continue with their education and achieve their academic goals.<\/p>\n
