The Kenya\nNational Union of Nurses (KNUN) was established in 2011 and registered in April\n19, 2013 as a Trade Union in Kenya under the provisions of the Labour Relations\nAct No. 14 of 2007 Laws of Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sole\npurpose of this Union was to be a World class union of choice for all nurses\nworking in Kenya. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The union was\nto establish a democratic platform upon which nurses shall address their grievances\nby engaging their employers in dialogue in order to improve nurses working\nconditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knun represents\nall cadres of nurses in Kenya drawn from practice setting, education and\nresearch institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All was well\nuntil 2017 when the term of the founding officials expired but used dubious\nmeans to remain in power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the\nfirst time in February 2021, the union will held its first \u2018democratic\u2019 elections\nwith Halima Adan Yusuf, the current Director of Nursing Services in Machakos\nCounty being main the challenger to the outgoing Secretary General Seth\nPanyako. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enough said,\nPanyako and Ms. Halima will sought their issues if they want but back at home\nin Vihiga County hell has broken loose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current\ncrop of leaders led Caleb Wamalwa Maloba (Vihiga Branch Secretary \u2013 Knun) and Zadock\nMiheso (Chairperson) are a disgrace to the nurses fraternity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The moment they\naccepted to be appointed in managerial positions by the County Government of\nVihiga is when they lost relevance. By accepting such appointments, it meant\nthey will always play to the gallery to please their masters at the expense of\nthe nurses they lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Robert\nGreene puts it in his book \u2018 48 Laws of Power\u2019 rule no. 44 \u2018 Despise The\nFree Lunch because what is offered for free is dangerous \u2014\nit usually involves a trick or a hidden obligation. What has worth is worth\npaying for. By paying your own way you stay clear of gratitude, guilt and\ndeceit. It is also often wise to pay the full price \u2014 there is no cutting\ncorners with excellence. Be lavish with your money and keep it circulating, for\ngenerosity is a sign and a magnet for power. This is the exact trap the union officials\nfound themselves in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the\nLabour Laws, you cannot be a union leader and at the same time holding a managerial\nposition in an organisation where you represent workers. That\u2019s is conflict of\ninterest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Maloba and Miheso\nare to contest in the forthcoming elections, they ought to have resigned the\ncurrent managerial positions six months to the elections and that has not been\ndone. Anyway, that\u2019s an issue they will agree themselves with the nurses they\nrepresent before the elections day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his book \u2018Robert\nGreene continues: \u201cIn the realm of power, everything must be judged by its\ncost, for everything has a price. What is offered for free or at a bargain\noften comes with a psychological price tag \u2014 complicated feelings of\nobligation, compromises with quality, the insecurity these comprises bring etc.\nThe powerful learn early to protect their most valuable resource: independence\nand room to maneuver. Being open and flexible also teaches the value of\nstrategic generosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knun Vihiga\nChapter is led by lame duck leaders who have failed completely to address the\ngrievances of nurses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s take\nstock of healthcare workers who were employed in May 2019, upon recruitment and\nposting to their respective stations, the County Public Service Board (CPSB)\nnullified their appointments on grounds that the process was marred by\nirregularities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They got a reprieve\nand were reinstated by the court. Since then, they only received a four month\nsalary and to date-they have stayed for 13 months without pay. What has union\nled by Maloba and Miheso done to salvage the situation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two leaders have been playing to the\ngallery all along and singing songs of praises when it comes to nurses\npromotions but nothing tangible has been achieved so far. Look at the recent\nstrike that was in effect between Nov 4th<\/sup> \u2013 Nov 13th<\/sup> 2020\nand nothing was achieved. A meeting between them (Knun) and County officials yield\nnothing save for empty promises and rhetoric as usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The letter calling off the strike after\nan \u2018agreement was reached was signed except for  Dr Arnold Mmamadi which means, it is not\nlegally binding and does not hold water in case the cease fire agreement is\nchallenged in court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

How come the union officials have never\nfollowed up the issue of nurses promotions even after CPA Livingstone Imbayi in\nhis letter dated August 19, 2020 that there was Sh10million set aside in the\n2020-2021 financial year for staff promotions in the health sector? Who is\nfooling who?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frontline healthcare workers in the fight\nagainst Covid19 has been a thorn in the flesh of medics. Nurses claim the PPEs\nare of low quality or in some instances, they are not there and then you wonder\nwhat the role of Knun in Vihiga County?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s bite the bullet and tell the truth\nas that\u2019s is what will vindicate us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
