Jackline Mwaka Okanya is a\ndistraught leader with the fact that over 1636 girls aged between 10-17 years\nin Mumias West constituency are mothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also over 3000 other girls\nwho have been impregnated during Covid-19 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The underage girls have fallen prey\nto sexual predators in the constituency and what astonishes her is the fact\nthat their close relatives are responsible for the pregnancies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okanya avers that moral decay and\nhaving absentee parents is what has led to the ever-increasing cases of teenage\npregnancies adding that abject poverty and poor leadership from the current\nleadership is what has failed to address the menace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cMumias West has 1636 gals aged between 9-14\nyears who have given birth. If we cannot take care of the kids, who will look after\nthem. Am forced to use my salary to cater for their needs but I don\u2019t have a kitty\nto reach them as am just a nominated ward rep,\u201d said Okanya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added; \u201cThe kids after giving birth,\nthey lose direction and that is how their dreams of becoming responsible adults\nin the society is killed. The perpetrators are people who are well known to\nthem but can\u2019t be punished as they are well connected,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nominated MCA at the Kakamega\nCounty Assembly in an exclusive interview with the County Splash News said that\neveryone is to be blamed for the mess, saying parents fear talking about sex with\ntheir daughters and leave that responsibility to teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With such problems in place and lack\nof good leadership in the area is what makes Okanya to make her first stab for the Mumias West parliamentary seat in\nthe next elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 The constituency has at least 111,862\nregistered voters as at 2017 elections according to the records at the IEBC.\nThe electoral area has four wards namely Mumias Central,\nMumias North, Etenje, and Musanda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okanya was born in Matungu Sub\nCounty and attended St Treza\u2019s Girls Primary \u2013 Nairobi and then St James\nBulimbo Girls Secondary School for her \u2018O\u2019 levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She joined Masinde Muliro University\nof Science and Technology (Mmust) and graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor\u2019s\nDegree in Business and Commerce (Finance option).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After her university education, she\nworked at Unilever, Cadbury and Royco as a sales and marketing personnel before\nmoving to the Kenya Women Finance Trust (KWFT). It is while at KWFT here that Okanya\u2019s\ndream of joining active politics was actualized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is also the treasurer of ACK Mumias\nDiocese and her hobbies are traveling and driving sporty cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, her dream of joining\npolitics started back in 2005 during the Ndizi and Chungwa plebiscite calls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a Chungwa supporter, she was\nactively involved in mobilization, printing and distribution of Chungwa\nt-shirts to supporters who were opposed to the plebiscite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2010, she joined ODM party and\nwas elected as the youth leader for Lurambi constituency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cYouths wanted me to run for Lurambi\nparliamentary seat in 2013 general elections but declined to venture into\nelective politics. In politics, you must have the correct timing, the correct\nplace, environment, and that time Lurambi was the right place for me but I squandered\nthe chance,\u201d said Okanya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAm open and I have integrity but\nthe current leaders are liars. They do not tell the electorates the truth. Am a\nstaunch Anglican and my faith tells me to say the truth. Our leaders are not\nhonest and their style of leadership lacks inclusivity,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In joining, the murky waters of\nMumias West politics where she will battle it out with the incumbent MP Johnson\nNaicca, Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa and Fada Mulla in the\n2022 polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okanya says she wants to improve the\neducation standards of the area, sports, empower women and improve the area\u2019s\neconomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe current leadership has failed\nto live as per the expectations and it\u2019s a high time we get a new leader who\nwill work for the people of Mumias West and that person is me,\u201d said Okanya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is already making inroads in the\nconstituency by constructing houses for the needy and vulnerable families.\nRecently, she run a football tournament across the constituency that has so far\nincreased her rating as compared to her competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okanya says she knows her\ncompetitors are very strong but she will give them a run for their money to\nbecome next area MP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Okanya, gender parity\nin elective seats can be achieved if women will be given the same opportunity\nas men to go for elective seats, saying they do not want to be nominated but\nfight for their space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWomen can be elected if they are\ngiven that equal chance as men. Even we have men who cannot be elected. If we\nput men and women on the same scale, we shall be elected. We have very few\nwomen seeking elective seats because they have not been enlightened and if they\ncome out vocally, they will get elected,\u201d said Okanya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She draws her inspiration from\nMillie Odhiambo, Phoebe Asiyo, Gladys Wanga, Prof Wangari Maathai, Rachel Shebesh\nand Orio Rogo Manduli who she says they have shown them the way and that they\nare up to the task to fight for their space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want favours but the constitution\nshould be followed. If you are nominated, next time look for elective seat. We\nare not flower girls and we must wake up and go for the seats,\u201d said Okanya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, a move by Amani National Congress to suspend Okanya from the\nassembly made her stronger after she staged a spirited fight in the courts with\nthe party\u2019s erstwhile Secretary General Barack Muluka who accused her disrupting\nparty activities at the Assembly despite having warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt has since come to our attention that you have not refrained from your\nchosen path of misconduct contrary to Article 50 of the party\u2019s constitution.\nWithin the next 30 days, you will be summoned to appear before the disciplinary\ncommittee and an appropriate action taken. You are hereby suspended from ANC\nwith immediate effect and during this period, you will not conduct any business\non behalf of the party.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMuluka wanted to micromanage the\nparty and which seats we should get. I refused to be intimidated by the party because\nam a woman and stood firm to date. The fight was not easy but with God\u2019s grace,\nthe courts vindicated me,\u201d said Okanya. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She describes Musalia Mudavadi like\na father figure when it comes to politics since he does not interfere with\nlocal politics, arguing that when you saw people being chased out of ANC party\nit is not Mudavadi\u2019s ideologies but a few selfish individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okanya believes ANC is better placed\nto produce the next President of Kenya after 2022 polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen Kibaki came to power, he\nstabilized economy as compared to previous government and the current one killed\nthe economy and only Mudavadi can revamp the economy and get jobs for our\nyouths,\u201d said Okanya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
