Residents of Amagoro Town in Teso North Sub County have outlined a range of priority concerns ahead of the anticipated commissioning of the Ksh 50 million Amagoro Multipurpose Market by William Ruto in March.<\/p>\n

Speaking on behalf of locals, community member Charles Aluku Obali said Amagoro \u2014 which serves as a sub-county headquarters \u2014 currently lacks designated market days despite its growing population and strategic position near the border.<\/p>\n

He noted that neighbouring trading centres such as Kocholia, Malaba and Amukura each operate two market days weekly, urging authorities to grant Amagoro similar arrangements to stimulate trade and improve livelihoods.<\/p>\n

Compensation and infrastructure concerns<\/p>\n

Residents also called for compensation for families living close to the market, arguing that this would help mitigate disruptions associated with construction and ease operations once the facility becomes fully functional.<\/p>\n

Security and infrastructure emerged as major issues. Locals requested installation of modern street lighting, noting that a previous lighting project initiated during the tenure of former Busia governor Sospeter Ojaamong is no longer operational.<\/p>\n

They proposed lighting coverage within a 400-metre radius of the market, saying improved illumination would enhance safety, extend business hours and support ambitions for a 24-hour border economy.<\/p>\n

Additionally, residents highlighted the need for reliable internet connectivity to facilitate cross-border trade and digital communication among traders.<\/p>\n

Youth urged to seize opportunities<\/p>\n

The 2,000-stall market is expected to provide modern trading spaces and strengthen local commerce once operational.<\/p>\n

Youth leader Alumasi Junior encouraged young people to take advantage of the facility by starting small enterprises rather than engaging in political activities.<\/p>\n

He suggested ventures such as barber shops, hotels and food businesses, adding that idle youth could begin with small-scale produce trading within the market.<\/p>\n

Some residents also appealed to area MP Oku Kaunya to support youth and women by facilitating access to stalls and enterprise opportunities, aligning with the government\u2019s bottom-up economic agenda.<\/p>\n

Political sentiments and regional issues<\/p>\n

Resident Idewa Philip Imwene called for broader political engagement with grassroots supporters ahead of the presidential visit and the 2027 elections.<\/p>\n

On regional matters, he addressed ongoing discussions surrounding Changara Division, stating that residents want clarity on development plans and governance issues affecting the area. He also referenced Sirisia MP John Waluke in relation to the debate.<\/p>\n

Outlook<\/p>\n

The Amagoro Multipurpose Market is widely viewed as a transformative project expected to boost trade, create employment and modernize commerce in the town. Residents say addressing infrastructure, security and economic inclusion concerns during the presidential visit will be key to ensuring the facility achieves its intended impact.<\/p>\n
