{"id":1149,"date":"2020-10-12T14:23:40","date_gmt":"2020-10-12T14:23:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/?p=1149"},"modified":"2020-10-12T14:23:40","modified_gmt":"2020-10-12T14:23:40","slug":"bungoma-sucks-in-coffee-aroma-as-farmers-record-sh1billion-profit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=1149","title":{"rendered":"Bungoma sucks in coffee aroma as farmers record Sh1billion profit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bungoma<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Tony Wafula <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plans to revive coffee farming in\nBungoma County have started paying off after farmers made profits of at least\nSh1billion for the first time after 20 years of dry spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The farmers after counting losses\ndue coffee theft from smugglers who used to sell in Uganda and unfavorable\nprices at the Kenyan market, majority of the farmers had uprooted their coffee\nplantations and ventured in maize and tomato farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"865\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/ww.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/ww.jpg 865w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/ww-270x300.jpg 270w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/ww-768x852.jpg 768w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/ww-696x772.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 865px) 100vw, 865px\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>Governor Wycliffe Wangamati<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three years ago, Governor Wycliffe\nWangamati\u2019s administration launched a campaign to encourage farmers back to\ncoffee farming and even gave them farm inputs like fertiliser and seedlings and\nthe move is now paying off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Governor also put up two coffee\nmilling factories where the county is producing its own branded coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u201cBungoma is now earning a\nstaggering Sh1 billion annually from coffee farming shared between 52 coffee\ncooperative societies that we revived three years ago. The county is now able\nto produce between 10-20million kilos of coffee cherries from over 7550 acres\nunder coffee production,\u201d said Governor Wycliffe Wangamati in an interview\nyesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The county has is further continuing\nwith the recruitment of farmers who had abandoned coffee farming and ones\nrecruited, a farmer gets free coffee seedlings and fertiliser as a way of\nencouraging them to venture in coffee farming for commercial purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlready, the County has helped form\n304 new coffee co-operative societies comprising of 63,847 farmers and\ndistributed over 3 million coffee seeds and seedlings. The county has\nintroduced Robusta coffee variety for the first time and we gave farmers in\nBumula Sub County as its soils are favourable,\u201d said Wangamati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/max-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/max-2.jpg 960w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/max-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/max-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/max-2-696x464.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati and the Bungoma business community giving food to needy families-Photo\/Tony Wafula\/County Splash<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;With two mills in place, the\nBungoma Cooperative Union Coffee Mill at Musese area in Kabuchai constituency\nand Mt Elgon Cooperative Union Mill at Chesikaki in Cheptais complete with\nweighbridges and warehouses in what is designed to cut the costs of\ntransporting raw beans to Thika for processing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Governor Wangamati avers that they\nmove will assist farmers reduce transport costs to Nairobi for milling while at\nthe same time getting better returns for their produce, adding that the county\nis now producing branded coffee, which will be hitting the market as from next\nmonth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor the first time, Bungoma coffee\nwill be milled in Bungoma, stored in Bungoma and sold directly from Bungoma.\nThe County has also earmarked to build more coffee factories and pulping\ncentres in Bumula, Kanduyi, Webuye large as well as Tongaren,\u201d said Wangamati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u201cTo complete the value chain, the county has\nmade contacts with some of the best coffee buyers in the US and Australia and\ncontinues to explore opportunities in other markets. For now we shall be\nexporting our branded coffee direct to US and Australia,\u201d Wangamati added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coffee farmers will save Sh.42\nmillion on transport alone as one bag of coffee cherries costs Sh350 to\ntransport to the capital city for milling as a result farmers made losses or\ngot very little returns.
