President William Ruto on Tuesday attended the 9th edition of the Turkana Tourism and Cultural Festival, popularly known as Tobong\u2019u Lore, meaning \u201cWelcome Back Home.\u201d<\/p>\n

The annual festival, which has become a key feature on Kenya\u2019s national tourism and cultural calendar, brought together members of the Ateker communities from Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, and Ethiopia, alongside visitors from across the region and beyond.<\/p>\n

Several leaders graced the colourful event, among them Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Kipyego, Uasin Gishu Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii, and host Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai Napokitan. Also in attendance was Busia Deputy Governor H.E. Arthur Odera.<\/p>\n

Addressing the gathering at Ekalees Centre, President Ruto announced that the government has set aside KSh 620 million for the construction of hostels to accommodate 1,300 students at Turkana University. He added that additional funds have been allocated for the construction of hostels for 6, 000 students in technical colleges across Turkana County, alongside KSh 500 million for the tarmacking of roads within Lodwar Town.<\/p>\n

Highlighting Kenya\u2019s strong sporting heritage, the President revealed that the government has allocated KSh 900 million for the construction of a modern stadium in Turkana County. He said contractors currently working on Talanta Stadium will undertake the project, with construction expected to begin in March 2026 and take one year to complete. An additional KSh 500 million has been earmarked for the expansion of Lodwar Airport to boost tourism.<\/p>\n

Donned in traditional attire, President Ruto further disclosed that the government plans to commence oil drilling in Turkana, with proceeds to be used to tarmac the shortest 70-kilometre road linking Turkana to Nakuru via Kapedo, Lokori, and Lokichar.<\/p>\n

On security matters, the President issued a stern warning to security agencies over reported cases of human trafficking, where Eritrean nationals are allegedly ferried into Kenya through Turkana. He termed the practice criminal and ordered immediate action. He also directed that 2,000 youths and elderly persons in Turkana County be issued with national identity cards starting January, following briefings from chiefs and assistant chiefs on the situation on the ground.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s four-day festival is being held under the theme:<\/p>\n

\u201cCradle of Humanity: Home of Culture \u2014 A Journey Through Turkana.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event is renowned for its rich Ateker cultural displays, featuring traditional music and dance, cultural exhibitions, trade showcases, cross-border peace and diplomacy forums, sports activities, speeches by leaders and invited guests, and the Miss Tourism Beauty Pageant. Organisers have also introduced new activities and events to enrich the festival experience.<\/p>\n

The Turkana Tourism and Cultural Festival was first held in 2015, making this year\u2019s celebration the ninth edition.<\/p>\n
