{"id":1022,"date":"2020-08-07T09:02:09","date_gmt":"2020-08-07T09:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countysplash.co.ke\/?p=1022"},"modified":"2020-08-07T09:02:09","modified_gmt":"2020-08-07T09:02:09","slug":"fishermen-protest-over-new-rules-on-fishing-in-lake-victoria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/?p=1022","title":{"rendered":"Fishermen protest over new rules on fishing in Lake Victoria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Busia <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Celine Wamala <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fishermen in Bunyala area in Busia County\nhave protested over the introduction of new guidelines set out by Marine Coast\nGuard aimed at protecting water bodies and illegal fishing in Lake Victoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cases of harassment and brutality\nmeted against the fishermen have been the order of the day prompting marine\nofficer to set the rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking in Budalangi during a\nmeeting that was also attended by government officials and area leaders, the\nfishermen expressed their dissatisfaction after the talks pointing out that\nthey&nbsp;be given more time to comply with the guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/92953361_1550066038501315_1798983567741550592_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1023\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/92953361_1550066038501315_1798983567741550592_n.jpg 768w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/92953361_1550066038501315_1798983567741550592_n-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/92953361_1550066038501315_1798983567741550592_n-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/horizonnews.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/92953361_1550066038501315_1798983567741550592_n-696x696.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>A beach in Bunyala Sub County<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They appealed to both county and\nnational government to set aside funds for fishermen considering that they were\nadversely affected by coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They asked the government to carry\nout sensitization of all fishermen across the 20 beaches in Busia and issue\nthem with recommended fishing nets and protection from harassment from Ugandan\nofficials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">County director of fisheries Timothy\nOdende noted that the national government and Kenya Coast Guards will work\ntogether to sensitize fishermen on importance of conserving the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He revealed that they will come up\nwith a roadmap to guide the fisher folk in order to eliminate illegal fishing\nin the Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fishermen want the marine department\nto restore their fishing nets that were nabbed last week after several\ndemonstration over harassment by Ugandan officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"\"><tbody><tr><td>\n  Ends\n  <\/td><td><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Busia By Celine Wamala Fishermen in Bunyala area in Busia County have protested over the introduction of new guidelines set out by Marine Coast Guard aimed at protecting water bodies and illegal fishing in Lake Victoria.
