Malaba Central Ward Leads In Bursary Registration As Exercise Closes

By Reuben Olita

Malaba Central Ward has emerged top in the bursary registration exercise as it came to a close, recording the highest number of applicants among the six wards in Teso North Constituency.

According to official figures released at the end of the exercise, Malaba Central registered 2,000 applicants, underscoring a strong public response and growing demand for education support within the ward.

The other wards recorded the following numbers:
Malaba South – 1,800
Angurai South – 1,800
Malaba North – 1,600
Angurai North – 1,600
Angurai East – 1,600

Education stakeholders say the high turnout reflects increased awareness of the bursary programme as well as the financial challenges facing many households.

Speaking after the exercise at District Officer’s Offices, Kiriko, Bursary Committee Chairman William Okalio urged applicants to remain patient, noting that cheques are expected to be ready by the end of February 2026.

He emphasized that fairness, transparency, and equity will guide the allocation process.

Meanwhile, Mr. Vincent Matama, the officer in charge of examinations at the Amagoro Education Office, represented the Sub-County Director of Education, Ms. Rose Sagara, who was part of a team moving around the constituency to vet applicants for the Elimu Scholarship under the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation.

A total of KSh 80 million has been allocated for the bursary exercise, with over 8,000 applicants expected to benefit.

The programme is the brainchild of the fund’s patron and Teso North Member of Parliament, Dr. Oku Kaunya.
