Bungoma County is in mourning following the death of one of its longest-serving ward representatives, Hon. Barasa Mukhongo, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Chwele–Kabuchai Ward.
Mukhongo passed away early Monday morning while receiving treatment at Hopekin Hospital in Bungoma town. He had been ailing for some time, and despite efforts to manage his condition, he succumbed while under medical care.
Born on 2nd August 1956, the late Mukhongo was a seasoned politician known for his unwavering commitment to the people of Kabuchai.
His political journey spanned decades, starting from the days of civic leadership before the advent of devolution. He continued to serve diligently as a Member of the County Assembly under the Ford Kenya party, which he remained loyal to until his demise.
His death has sparked an outpouring of grief across Bungoma County, with residents and leaders alike praising his leadership, humility, and relentless pursuit of development for his constituents.

Governor Lusaka Leads Tributes
Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka led leaders in conveying condolences to Mukhongo’s family and the people of Kabuchai.
Addressing the press in Bungoma town, Lusaka described the late MCA as a courageous and hardworking leader who championed the interests of his people with passion and integrity.
“We have lost a true servant of the people. Barasa Mukhongo was not just an MCA; he was a pillar in Bungoma’s political space—respected across the divide,” Governor Lusaka said.
The governor promised to work closely with the deceased’s family and the county assembly to ensure Mukhongo receives a dignified send-off befitting his stature and service to the community.
“He Spoke for the Voiceless” – MP Kalasinga.
Kabuchai Member of Parliament, Majimbo Kalasinga, also paid a heartfelt tribute to Mukhongo, describing him as a fearless leader who selflessly defended the interests of his constituents.
“Barasa was a man of the people. He always stood up to speak on behalf of those who had no voice. He believed in service, not self. His passing is a huge blow to Kabuchai and Bungoma County at large,” Kalasinga said.
The MP called on local leaders, especially those from Kabuchai, to put aside any political differences and unite in giving Mukhongo a befitting farewell.
Joseph Nyongesa: A Selfless Patriot
Leader of Majority in the Bungoma County Assembly, Joseph Nyongesa, described Mukhongo as a principled and transparent leader who prioritized the interests of the people over personal gain.
“He was a firm believer in servant leadership. As a long-serving member of this assembly, he provided institutional memory and guided new MCAs with wisdom. His commitment to Chwele–Kabuchai was unmatched,” Nyongesa noted.
He added that Mukhongo had a unique ability to bridge community and political differences, making him a unifier in a region often characterized by political rivalry.
A Legacy of Service
Mukhongo’s political career was marked by consistency, dedication, and a deep connection with grassroots communities. Over the years, he advocated for better infrastructure, access to healthcare, and improved livelihoods in Kabuchai.
He was particularly passionate about education and youth empowerment, often initiating bursary programs and mentorship sessions for young people.
Residents in Chwele and surrounding areas recall him as a leader who was always reachable and ready to attend to local issues, however small.
He was known for showing up unannounced at public institutions, health centers, and marketplaces to assess service delivery and gather feedback directly from the people.
Public Reactions
News of Mukhongo’s death spread quickly across Bungoma County, drawing emotional reactions from residents, colleagues, and political allies.
“I have known Mukhongo for over 15 years. He was not only our MCA but also a brother and a friend.
He came to our rescue when my brother died and we were unable to foot the hospital bill four years ago,” said Jane Nasimiyu, a resident of Chwele.
Another resident, Jackson Wekesa, described him as “a grassroots general who preferred action over publicity.”
Social media platforms were flooded with messages of condolence, with many calling him a rare breed of politician who truly understood the needs of the people.
Political Impact
Mukhongo’s death leaves a gap not only in representation but also in the political dynamics of Bungoma. As a loyal member of Ford Kenya and a close ally of party leader Moses Wetang’ula, his absence will be felt as the region prepares for upcoming political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Observers note that his experience and voice often helped calm political tensions and guide policy debates in the county assembly. His departure creates a vacuum that will be difficult to fill, particularly as Bungoma grapples with development and leadership challenges.
Funeral Arrangements Underway
According to sources close to the family, plans are underway to organize a befitting funeral ceremony for the late MCA.
The Bungoma County Assembly is expected to hold a special sitting in his honor, while Ford Kenya Party officials are preparing a tribute event to celebrate his life and contributions.
Governor Lusaka has indicated that the county government will support the funeral arrangements and provide any necessary assistance to the grieving family.
“We want to honor his legacy by walking with the family during this painful period. Mukhongo gave his life to public service, and it’s only right that we give him a heroic send-off,” Lusaka affirmed.
Final Word
The passing of Barasa Mukhongo, born on 2nd August 1956, marks the end of an era in Bungoma politics. He was more than a politician—he was a mentor, a mobilizer, and a visionary who stood by his people until the very end.
As Bungoma prepares to lay him to rest, the county pauses to remember a man who embodied the true meaning of public service.
May his soul rest in eternal peace
