Sports in schools is key to nurture talents, therefore teachers from Bungoma county have urged the government to build swimming pools in schools to empower swimming talent amongst pupils in public schools.
Speaking at Bungoma Tourists Hotel during the swimming competition event,Teacher Kennedy Murimba Bungoma county sports treasurer within municipality urged the government to at least boost childrens swimming talent by providing enough capitation for the sport’s facilities.
Murimba noted that swimming was only done in private schools of which there is a need to facilitate the public schools so that its pupils participate in the activity.
“Swimming is one of the activities in sports which is included in the current curriculum, but there are no swimming pools in schools to curb the need for training,”said Murimba.
He further explained that the lack of swimming pools in schools forces those children who have interest in swimming to go to the riverside to swim where their security is at high risk ,they can be bitten by dangerous aquatic animals like crocodiles.
Penina Makokha who started swimming way back at the age of six says her target is to continue doing well and be the best in local competition as well as top level.
“I want to continue doing my best and putting more efforts in what I am doing to achieve the best.My target is to win at national and regional level and eventually join the Kenya Swimming Federation for the national competition.”Said wanjiku who is aminated to represent her school.
Tyler, who is their coach, has been working with them as they prepare for the regional competition on Friday and says the school has a lot of hope in the team .
“We have seven girls who will be representing the school at regional level and we have high hopes in them. We’ve been training hard and putting efforts to see them excel in whatever competition that comes their way.”said coach Tyler.
As per the current curriculum, nurturing talents is key to pupils hence the need to build sports grounds like swimming pools within schools.
