Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Calls For Collaborative Efforts To Tackle Drug Abuse

By Mercy Buyanzi

Trans Nzoia County Commissioner, Gideon Oyagi, has emphasized the need for a collaborative approach in tackling drug and substance abuse among the youth in the region.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony for the National Prevention Week in Kitale, Oyagi highlighted that solely relying on security forces to curb the menace was insufficient.

“Focusing only on law enforcement measures limits the effectiveness of our efforts. A multi-sectoral approach is essential in reversing the worrying trend, especially among the youth,” Mr. Oyagi remarked, stressing that a more holistic strategy involving various stakeholders is necessary to combat the escalating issue.
The week-long campaign, organized by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), aims to engage local communities in Trans Nzoia to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse.

NACADA Trizah Mwangi, a representative, outlined the objectives of the initiative, which will focus on sensitizing residents about effective strategies to combat the growing issue.

“This campaign will serve as an opportunity to educate the public about the severe impact of drug and substance abuse, particularly its pervasive presence among the youth,” Ms. Mwangi said. She noted that such educational efforts are critical in preventing further spread of this dangerous trend.

Recent studies on substance use have shown that alcohol remains the most commonly used substance among university students, with 87.3% of respondents acknowledging its availability. These statistics underscore the urgency of addressing substance abuse in educational institutions, where the young population is particularly vulnerable.

Through initiatives like the National Prevention Week, officials are hoping to increase public awareness and encourage more comprehensive community involvement in tackling this pressing issue.

As the campaign progresses, the county government and NACADA are calling for greater cooperation between schools, parents, health professionals, and law enforcement to curb drug abuse and its damaging effects on society.
