Youths in Bungoma County have been urged to abstain from reckless sexual behavior to safeguard their future and reduce the prevalence of HIV/AIDS.

Speaking at Pan Paper Stadium in Webuye during World AIDS Day celebrations, Bungoma Deputy Governor Pastor Janepher Mbatiany emphasized the importance of responsible choices to ensure a healthier generation.

“Statistics show that the highest number of those affected are youths. This is why we are calling on them to abstain from reckless sexual behaviors. This will ensure we have a bright and healthy future,” said Mbatiany.

She further appealed to residents to act as ambassadors in the fight against HIV/AIDS, promoting practices that would minimize its spread.

Health and Sanitation CECM Carolyne Makali highlighted that youth aged 14-24 are leading in new HIV infections. She called on parents to closely monitor their children during the long holiday to prevent engagement in activities that could endanger their lives.

“As a county, we are calling upon leaders and parents to strive for an AIDS-free society. They should preach the message of combating the disease to ensure we build a healthy community,” Makali stated.

Deputy Governor Mbatiany also flagged off the Martin Pepela Tournament, a sports initiative aimed at keeping youths constructively engaged while raising awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention.

The event was attended by County Secretary William Nasong’o, Webuye East MP Martin Wanyonyi, Chief Officer for Health and Sanitation Dr. Magrina Mayama, Director Dr. Caleb Watta, and other senior government officials and private partners.
